I hate always having to drive home for lunch but it's hard to think of things to pack. ?My 2.5 year old doesn't like peanut butter and jelly which would be so easy. ?
Honestly I usually just stop and buy something, but it's bad for the budget But at this point if we go to the mall, DD automatically assumes she's eating "chicken and french fries and fruit" from chikfila. She also can pack away almost all of a quarter pound hotdog at costco! (minus most of the bread) - and that's what she ate for lunch today at 10:55am!!
But for trips to the zoo and such where I pack a lunch for her (or for MDO) I just pack stuff she normally eats and toss an ice pack in there. Or even do something warm in a little thermos. So a normal lunch for her might be tofu, green beans, oranges, and crackers. Or buttered noodles, broccoli, yogurt and grapes. Or cheese and crackers, a bit of leftover chicken, and fruit cocktail. All the veggies are served cold because she's always eaten them that way and loves to eat them out of little tupperware cups (not from a plate). DD also loves canned fruit, I don't often buy the individual serving size, I buy stuff packed in its own juice in a big can and put it in individual cups when I open it.
I always pack a lunch when we go to the zoo since the food there is ridiculously expensive. ?I typically make cream cheese and jelly sandwiches or lunch meat and cheese. ?I also bring some cut up veggies (cucumbers are a big favorite of Eva's), cheese sticks, goldfish crackers and/or yogurt. ?I'll throw in an apple or banana too.
DD is still pretty young, so there is still a lot that she doesn't eat. I usually have to bring something if I plan to be out around lunch time (I try to be home since it's such a pain).
I always bring a bottle, some mum mums, maybe a yo baby yogurt, and some cut up fruit and veggies and/or puffs. Like Harriett, it's more of a "snack" type lunch.
If we are at a restaurant with friends or family I will try to find something she can eat. For example, we were at an Italian restaurant with my sister two weeks ago, and I ripped up little pieces of the pizza dough and a tad bit of olive oil. At La Madeleine the week before, I bought her a fruit cup and gave her ripped up pieces of the chicken from my sandwich.
On our way to 3 under 4!

Baby Boy Due This Summer!
Have you seen those new Deli Thin breads at the supermarket? They are perfect for toddlers on the go! They are just the right size and no crusts to cut off. So with those in mind I do a lot of sandwiches for picnics.
We do cream cheese & jelly (trust me, it's yummy and I know lots of toddlers that gobble it up). Or just a plain cheese sandwich. Or a low-sodium deli meat sandwich - maybe turkey or ham & cheese.
Cheese & crackers is always a hit.
I also pack some kind of fruit. Either I cut something or I found these great little baggies of dried apples & pears at Costco. They are packaged like potato chips and there's nothing else in them except the fruit. So they are perfect for picnics.
Re: if you are out and about and need to pack a lunch...what do you pack?
If I'm truly out and about, I like to go out to eat! The boys just get something off the kid's menu and split it.
If I have to bring their lunch somewhere, I try to stick with finger foods and things that are easy to eat. Crackers, cheese, fruit, etc.

I pack lunch at the zoo because everyone I know has gotten food poisoning there at some point.
