NTR: So frustrated....

I am trying desperately to lose weight. I signed up to compete in a sprint triathlon next spring (didn't know what I was thinking) to help motivate me to train and get these few pounds off.

I am training everyday either biking, swimming, or running. Plus I have two strength training sessions added in. Total for the week I am exercising around 5-6 hours. Mostly are in the morning or late at night as to not interfere with playtime with Katie or my husband. I have been doing this for about a month. I have already ran in 2 5K runs and I have a 10K run scheduled for the end of November. It's not like I am not doing anything.

My problem is eating. I love food way to much, but I still try to do well. I never ate breakfast before and now I eat either oatmeal or a bagel with peanut butter. I try to make better choices. I was down 5lbs. Clothes were starting to fit me better. My mom commented that I was starting to look skinny. Then it came back on. I am thinking that maybe I am building muscle. It's just so heartening to see the pounds start to come off and then two days later I'm back where I started even with all the exercising.

So, my question, would seeing a nutrionist help me or do I need to see a therapist to help curb my cravings. I am so weak when it comes to food. I try to get it out of my mind, but the cravings always win. It's like I have an internal battle with my mind. I picture the devil and the angel on my shoulder arguing back and forth. I start with good intentions and then it all goes downhill.

What do you think?

Re: NTR: So frustrated....

  • my suggestion: don't buy the crappy food, if you don't have it in the house then you will not eat it.  i know it is hard with other people in the house, everynow and then i will buy dh a "treat" and he eats the whole thing so there isn't anything left over for me, lol.  at work is a challenge too b/c of all the treats everyone brings in there, i don't go into the kitchen.

you are doing an awesome job with working out, just need to translate that self control into the food dept.  and remember that muscle weighs more than fat.  go with how you feel in your clothes rather than a number on the scale.

  • I too joined a triathalon group.  Added into this group is an hour discussion once a week about food choices.  They recommended a lot of helpful things - cutting the sugar.  Not buying any cereal with over 5grams of sugar per serving, lots of water, make sure you eat veggies, veggies nad more veggies.

The enforce eating BREAKFAST even if you're not a breakfast person - eat something.  Even if it's a liquid type breakfast : Have a protein shake, add a banana, strawberries to it in the morning.

Eat protein (low fat) - a lot of people skip this.  Morning Star brand has frozen veggie patties and sausage links - they are VEGAN and have tons of protein.   Some more low protein - egg beaters, egg whites, salmon (lox, etc..) chicken.  Make sure you serve smaller portions, if you're going to eat chips eat those healthy (and very expensive) veggie chips.  If you're going to eat bread eat high fiber protein bread (the kind at the healthfood stores like Ezekiel bread, etc..)

Eat 3-6 smaller meals per day.  Greek yogurt, almonds, dried fruit like apricots, raisins, fresh veggies (1/2 to 1 cup of the following) : brussel sprouts, cabbage, green beans, carrots.  Again tons and tons of water.

They also recommend not looking at "pounds you lose" but rather "inches".   Good Luck and don't get discouraged.

  • That is amazing with your exercising!!  Good for you for sticking with it so well!

Food is hard for everyone I think.  I absolutely know HOW to eat.  Hands down I probably know as much as a nutritionist.  But I just don't do it as well as I should.

I think you need to find your motivation (haha - that sounds hokey, huh?).  When those cookies or frapuccinos or whatever are calling your name - what is more important?  Write it down, tell other people. There is a reason why you are pushing yourself so hard for exercise - why?  And dig deeper than "i want to look good in jeans".

keep a food diary.  put up little post-it notes throughout your weak areas - the kitchen pantry, the frig, the cabinet.  Take a picture of yourself in a bikini and carry it with you.  Everytime you go to eat poorly, stop and look at that picture.

I think you need a nutritionist more than a therapist.  A nutritionist will give you concrete goals and help you through your slump.

    GL!

  • It is really hard, isn't it?  That's my problem too.  I agree that just not buying things that are not good is a good start.  Eating right is pretty common sense, most of know what to do. It's doing it that is hard!  I went to the grocery store a couple days ago and bought so many veggies I don't know what I am going to do with them!  But at the same time, I feel like I have to eat those before they go bad, and not the frozen meal in the freezer, ya know?  I also have a pic of me in a bikini on my fridge! lol
