Do you know anyone who carries a gun?

As in, has a CCW and carries the gun with them most places they go...

I recently found out my BIL does this. I don't like it. I just don't see WHY he needs to carry a gun with him - he lives and works in a safe area.

Anyone else have gun-toting relatives!?

Re: Do you know anyone who carries a gun?

  • Yes. I do at times (although not all the time). It just depends on where I'm going and if I'm alone or just with Preston.

  • My neighbor across the street. He's a cop though. I heard a rumor that my pastor from church has one.

We have a BB gun here.

  • My uncle carries one in his semi truck.  He is a long-haul truck driver.

I have family who has guns at home, but as far as I know, they don't carry it on their person.

  • Yes, a friend of MH's from high school does.  He has a CCW permit and everything.

I think he's in the military too though - I don't know; I don't know him that well.  I just know he has a gun.

It doesn't bother me at all.  He obviously had to go through red tape to get the permit which is better than someone just having a gun if you ask me.

  • my former MIL has a 9mm Glock.  She doesnt carry it with her...it stays in the house since she doesnt have a permit to carry it on her person....just has a pistol permit.

Wow - so you could use it if you were in a dangerous situation? Did you take a course or anything?

  • Yes, my uncle, but he's in a specialized area of law enforcement. Doesn't bother me.

ETA: I can't imagine someone like my MIL packing heat. She shouldn't be allowed anything more deadly than a spork.

  • Not t,hat I'm aware of.  I've never seen a real gun in person except on a police officer's uniform.  Why would anyone carry a gun?  I never understand why anyone would want to own/carry something that's only purpose is killing.

  • I do if I am driving around without DH or DH carries one if we are going to the mountains or somewhere more deserted.  I doubt I will ever have to use it but I like being prepared.  You never know when a crazy Bumpie will attack Stick out tongue.

Yes. I had to take a written course, have my credentials checked and have so many hours shooting. I have a CPL - Concealed Pistol License.

  • Yes, I know several people.

    ditto all of this.

I guess I should've said "civilians" who carry guns. I would expect people in law enforcement to carry a gun. And I'm not talking about owning one either. It's having that CCW and carrying it with you everywhere when you're not in a dangerous situation. I don't really understand that.

  • I carry it for a number of reasons.  Some are crazy worries and some could happen.  Have you ever seen the movie Cujo?  If she had a gun she could have shot the dog.  What if someone tried to carjack me with my kid's in the car.  I would shoot them in a second.  If crazy criminals have guns than "regular" people should too.  I know how to use it and I am very careful.

I guess it comes down to the whole, "it's either me or him" mentality.  My uncle who carries a gun on his long-haul trips had had many situations where if he didn't have a gun he would have been hurt.  He has never shot anyone, but he will show it to people who come up to his truck at night with intentions that are not good.

  • God, no. Aside from cops and people who are on their way to hunt, I have no idea why you would need to carry a gun AT ALL TIMES. Ridiculous.
  • What if someone tried to carjack me with my kid's in the car.

Really?  I live in a not so nice part of NYC (Harlem) and drive there at night alone with my kids and still have never wanted a gun.  I keep my doors locked (actually, in my car they automatically lock) and would run a red light if the area looked deserted and creepy, but I could never shoot someone.

  • In response to the carjacking thing, wouldn't they have already pulled a weapon on you before you'd have a chance to even start to look for your gun?
    imageimageimage
  • My husband and I have a concealed weapons permit.  He carries one with him (not on him mostly) because he travels a lot for his job...you never know what kind of crazies you'll run into.

I do not carry one on my person but we have several in the house (locked up and out of the way).  I know exactly how to use every one we have.

I can shoot better than my husband at the range :)

I am sorry, but LOL at the Cujo reference.  That wasn't even in my realm of stuff to be worried about.

  • Really, Cujo? I'm super glad you carry a loaded gun.

    LOL. I can too.

  • I think in the vast, vast, vast majority of situations where you would actually need to kill another human being in order to survive yourself, the chances of getting the gun out safely and using it properly in the time you need to (regardless of training) is slim. For example, people keeping guns in their house locked up (as you are supposed to) - the time it takes you to get the key, unlock it, load it, etc.  No way. Also in a carjacking, that person will already have a gun on you. If some guy comes up to my car pointing a gun at me I can raise my hands and get the Hell out with DS which is what they want. If I reach into my purse to grab my gun I get SHOT, so there I am, dead, and DS is alone in the car with the douche that killed me. Sorry, I would rather lose my car.

Also, to live in such a climate of fear as to think I need to be prepared to KILL someone at any given time??? No thank you.

If she had a cell phone she would have been fine. She didn't need a gun.

  • My cop uncle (now deceased) always had 2 on him off duty.  Other than that, nope.

It's not my thing, guns aren't allowed in my house - but if someone I know wants to or needs to carry one, so be it.

Out of curiousity, I'm not clear if you generally would have it when you are just with P?

  • Yes, my niece & her DH are both cops so they have guns w/them at all times.  Whether you agree or not- the statement that "he lives and works in a safe area" is not relevant to whether he chooses to carry a gun or not.  IMO, there is no "safe" area necessarily- crime can happen anywhere.  It would certainly be fair of you to ask that when your children are around, that the gun is safely somewhere that they could not ever have access to it.  Other than that, it's his personal choice & right!
  • Joe carries his at times.  And I TOTALLY make fun of him.  I think it's ridiculously STUPID!

And I'm a gun fan, in general.  We have 5 of them in my house.  I know how to load/unload and shoot all of them.  I actually enjoy it.  (at the range that is)

But to carry one?!  COME ON!   I think it's totally dorky.

That said, he only carries it when he is snow plowing (he does plow snow in some not so nice areas!) and when he goes to the shop at night by himself (again, not that it's in a bad area but it's down a dirt road and has already been robbed (not his side but his neighbor's side) 3 times!)!!!

So I get why he does carry it --- but I still think it's dorky!

No. I have carried it when I haven't been with P too. Just depends on where I'm going and if  I feel it would be necessary or not.

  • My dad is the only one I know who has one, but he's an investigator.

I don't get guns either.  But then again, I also don't get hunting.

  • I just gave a couple of random reasons out of the thousands.  Yes, Cujo is a crazy reason but she would have been glad to have a gun in the situation.  I will probably never have to use it but I feel better having it.

  • Yes, my father does. However, he's a former police officer/drug narcotics officer.

  • Yes, My friends husband carries ones in his car, his car has been broken into a few times, but I honestly think that he's doing it just for show, he's a dumbass like that.
  • I have a couple friends whose husbands carry their guns pretty much anywhere, including places like Walmart.

It's moose season here right now.  A lot of people feed their families with game.  Hunting makes sense to me for that reason.

Carrying a gun at all times?  It wouldn't even occur to me that someone would consider doing that unless they were a criminal (or in law enforcement).  I mean, I know people do, but I just don't get it at all.

We have hunting rifles in the house, no ammo.  They are locked in a guncabinet which is bolted to the foundation in the crawlspace which is behind a locked door.
