Parenting after a Loss

LO wont take a bottle anymore!

Avery always did well with taking an occasional bottle. She also had bottles during the day for a whole week when I went back to work. That was about a month ago. DH and I went out for his birthday this past weekend and left DD with my mom. She refused the bottle and screamed bloody murder when trying to give it to her.  I have since been trying to get her to take a bottle at least once a day. No such luck. Any tips?? I have tried feeding her on breast and switching to bottle, waiting until she wasn't starving, waiting until she was really hungry..nothing! I need to get her to take bottle or I will never be able to leave her! Aghhhhh

Re: LO wont take a bottle anymore!

  • Hugs. Have you tried different bottles/nipples? My DD has been stubborn since I went back to work. She drinks maybe 2-3 oz while I'm gone and then reverse cycles at night. We tried the things you did, plus feeding in different positions, someone else feeding, making sure the temp is just right, different bottles/nipples. DD cries too when the bottle is given, but is happy as a clam the rest of the time. I'm sorry I don't have advice, just wanted to say GL and hope something works for you!! She'll eat when she's hungry...I know that's hard and we have only left her with a sitter once (besides daycare daily), but it is true :)

  • Definitely have DH or someone else try to feed her. Mommy = booby in her mind so she may resist more for you. Try different nipples and temp of milk (most breastfed babies like it a bit warm). Offer before she gets too hungry and fussy. Good luck!

  • She will drink from a bottle if she's hungry enough. I second trying different nipples/bottles. Also she will refuse to drink it if there is something wrong with it. Such as spoiled or along those lines. My DD does this as well some but she has no choice as I work. She will also refuse a bottle if I'm around now so I have to nurse in public.
  • I agree with pp about trying different bottles/nipples. Maybe one that is more like the breast would help? And also with Dad feeding her. DS gets a bottle from DH every night, but when I try it is a fight.

Also, are you using frozen milk? Has she ever had frozen milk prior to this? Some women have excess lipase in their breastmilk which can make their thawed frozen milk taste bad, and they often refuse it.

  • I went through the same exact thing in August. She had been fine taking it and then we stopped for awhile and she wouldn't take it. We tried all different bottles and she finally started taking the Playtex Drop Ins. Your LO will eventually take it. If you have to go out while someone feeds her then do that. It took us a few weeks for DD to start taking one again and now she drinks out of them like a champ! Stick with it!! I know it is soo hard and frustrating. • I have no suggestions but I wanted to say hi!  Look at her smile in that picture!!

  • Both of mine went on a bottle stike about 3 months- right before I had to go back to work. I had to try several bottles, but once I found 'the one" that they would take they did great with it.  I had good luck with NUK latex nipples with DS #1 and Dr. Browns with DS #2.
