H1N1 Swine Flu Shot - Thoughts?

Im so back and forth on whether to get this shot or not. Any thoughts from you guys???

Were 1st on the list to get this shot and my thoughts are this...If i DONT get the shot and contract Swine Flu then im putting mine and my childs life in danger. If i DO get the shot and they find something wrong with it i dont want to endanger my unborn child.

I have two kids in elementary school and my job is out in the public so i feel like a ticking time bomb.

  • Would you get the seasonal flu shot?  If you answered yes, then get the H1N1.  It is not different.

  • I got it 2 days ago. it's fine.  Either get it or don't, stop panicking about it.

  • I have to wait until next Saturday the 31st to get mine, I got the seasonal flu for the first time ever about a month ago and we are both fine. Get the preservative free/themerisol free version, they will give it to you if your pregnant. I usually never get shots but I am doing it for the baby...I work in a building with doctor's offices and people here are getting sick all the time and coming to work...
  • Oh my lord.  How many times a day is this topic going to come up????

  • What's going to make you worry more?  Getting swine flu, or unknown side effects that you may never see?

For me, it's getting the swine flu.  I have read too many horror stories about women who died, or women who lived but lost their babies.  I don't want to live in fear until my due date in May (and beyond - babies are vulnerable once they're born, too, and this will protect them for at least a few months during that time).

I am not a doctor.  I'm a lawyer, and when people think they understand the law because they watch Law and Order it drives me nuts.  So, I figure I will let my doctor do her job.  She knows more than me about this stuff, so I will take her advice.

I've been super cautious about vaccines ever since I had a bad-ish reaction to a tetanus vaccine.  No one knew why I was having the reaction I was having and it made me feel alone and scared.  They just kept saying "it's not normal."  Nice.  So I understand the paranoia.  But the risks are just too great with this one.

  • I've decided against it. I'll get it later if the swine flu all of a sudden gets crazy as we get more into flu season but for now - no way. And I'm not getting the regular flu shot either. And DEFINITELY neither in my 1st tri.

Do some research on people who had flu shots while pregs years ago and how their children turned out. It's a huge decision so do your research. I'm choosing to be an extremely anal germaphobe and see how that works out for me. Just playing it by ear for now... GL.

  • Well im definitely not panicking about this what so ever whoever said that??? I just feel like with my job im in contact with people 24-7 and i feel like its a matter of time.

If you dont want to hear about swine flu then dont click on the thread. I dont think there is anything wrong with discussing the well being of my unborn child. Geez.  :-)

  • I got both the seasonal flu and the H1N1 vaccine. I got the seasonal before I even knew I was pregnant, and got the H1N1 yesterday. I got it for a few reasons....one, my OB highly recommened it. At first I was iffy about a "new vaccine" but I get the seasonal vaccine almost every year and that is "new" each time too. Also, I work in a hospital and with cancer patients, so not only am I exposed to alot of sick people on any given day, I also dont want to risk hurting my patients any more.

  • 7 confirmed cases in my school (that I know of!)  - I'm desperately looking for it!  Anyone know of a place in Atlanta?
  • This is not a "new" vaccine.  It is made the exact same way as every other flu vaccine, and if they had had enough time it would have been part of the normal seasonal flu vaccine this year.  Also, 1 in 3 pregnant women who are hospitalized for H1N1 die. DIE.  That is a ridiculous statistic.  Do you really think it is worth not getting?  Particularly in your job where you have a much higher chance of contracting it.

And whoever said they weren't getting it unless H1N1 became significantly more prevalent...that is insane.  It is already really hard to find in many areas, I have several friends who have been on a waiting list for weeks. If it became more widespread it would be exponentially harder to find.  Already, your immunity isn't there until 8 - 10 days later......in an epidemic, that is plenty of time to wipe you and your baby out even if you went on day 1 to get it.

The CDC highly recommends it, that is enough for me.
