i don't think gooey is good.  you might want to call the pedi.

DD's didn't fall off until 3 1/2 weeks after birth but her held on by a "gooey thread" too and I kept putting alcohol on it, I think it helped dry it up.

LO's just fell of the other day and it was all dried out. ?We were told NOT to put alcohol on the cord. ?

I was also told not to put alcohol on the umbilical cord. I was told it makes it take LONGER to fall off.
