WWYD December Birthday

Andrew will turn 1 (actual) on Dec 30th. I think what I want to do is to have a small party for him on his birthday, but then instead have a big party after RSV season to celebrate his 1 year adjusted birthday, his 1 year NICU homecoming (Apr 24th) and the end of RSV season and our freedom. :)

My question is, as far as his actual birthday goes, would you keep it to immediate family (parents, brothers, sisters) which there are 11 of us (including DH, DS, and I).

Would you extend it to Dh's and my grandparents (so that would make 19 total).  Too many people?

Our family is very careful and mindful of germs and nobody would come over if knowingly sick, but the thought of that many people makes me nervous.  But, it's his first and only 1-year old birthday.  And not that I'm making this decison to make others happy, but he's the only great-grand kid on both sides (and DH is an only grandkid) and DH's grandparents are 89.  Eeek.

WWYD?

  • If the extended guests would be as careful as the original group and you have room I would go for it.  The number of people will not affect his chances.  Rather it is the health of the people.

  • I only thought more people = more risky in case someone had something but didn't know they were carrying it yet.  But, like you said, if everyone seems healthy and washes their hands, maybe it's low risk. I may see what the pedi says too!
  • We just had Carter's baptism and only half our guests showed up.most due to illness...so atleast i  know i can trust our families to stay away even if they are the tiniest bit sick.
  • We are having the same debate as our DD's birthday is 1/29, and her coming home celebration from the NICU is 5/5.  I have the same fears as you, but I agree that there really is only one first birthday.  We may have a few less people since my house is tiny, so that just means more people to invite to a big outdoor event in May.  There's only so much we can do to avoid all the germs, anyway.
