is anyone doing valances on the outside of the window? do they make rods that can still give it a clean, modern look? the other option for my window is inside on a tension rod, but then i can't open the blinds (they open sideways, not up and down).

I say on the outside, it sounds like it wouldn't work on the inside for you. ?And if it isn't functional in a space, it isn't really modern. ?To make the the valance look modern, the key will be the valance itself, not the rod. ?Buy a standard valance rod and then cut any extra fabric?that balloons on the outside. Then?sew finished?edges on.?It really needs to fit perfectly and have some structure. ?Maybe try starching the fabric and then ironing after you cut to size. ?
