Bitten by a cat...what to do?

My 1 year old DD was bitten by a cat at daycare yesterday when they were outside. This is a neighborhood cat that is described by DDs daycare provider as young and spunky but friendly. The cat was sunning itself and the daycare provider had DD on her lap and was rocking back and forth with her. The cat bit her leg. The bite is minimal, but it did break the skin. DDs daycare provider contacted the owners and they said that the cat's had her shots but isn't up to date on rabies. They're afraid that the cat will need to be put down. I've never had this happen before. I have no idea what to do. DDs pedi said to bring her in for shots and watch for swelling and redness or other sign of infection. Any advice??

  • Do what the pediatrician says.  Young or not this is not an indoors cat and you have no idea what it is exposed to.

  • I agree with littlejen. Its not a risk I'd take.

  • Oh and I totally do not want to see a cat put down but who the F lets their animal roam free but does not get them a rabies shot?  I would make the owner pay your pedi bills!

  • thanks...off to the pedi I go. and, right -- why would you let your cat be outdoors without keeping it up to date with it's rabies shot?!?!?
