I got the H1N1 shot last night after I swore I would not do it. The other night our daycare had a highly respected Dr come and speak to the parents about the Swine Flu and it was enough to really scare the crap out of me. Especially after he said he had just had it the week prior and detailed just how bad it was for him and how nasty the tamiflu is to you.
The reason I decided to get it wasn't just because I am PG, but I have asthma. Thankfully, my pedi had just gotten there allotment of the vaccine in and because of my risk status they gave shots to both me and my DH when we took DD in for hers. Now hopefully there will be another dose availabel next month, as DD has to get a 2nd shot because of her age.
Re: So...I caved in.....
I still haven't gotten it and had about decided that I wasn't going to. I may change my mind if my dr's office gets it though.
It's in short supply here too. I know it is a bit of a long drive, but I know that the Fairfax County Government Center is having a clinic on Saturday morning beginning i think at 9am.
I also heard of some clinics in Arlington and in DC. They are not requiring residency and PG women are the priority.
I didn't know they weren't requiring residency. I may have to check out the DC or Arlington one. I work in Bethesda so I'm used to the drive. Thanks!

MrsKLS - Have you gotten the regular flu shot this year too? If so, how far apart from the H1N1?
I hadn't totally made up my mind until the last few days. I am definitely going to get it too. I don't normally have breathing problems, but recently I am getting so out of breath just climbing stairs or walking briskly. (Even sometimes while talking.) It just makes me nervous that our lungs get so compromised... along with our immune systems.
One thing I am going to try to do is get one without Thimerosal. I think the chances are going to be slim though. If they are in short supply of the regular vaccine, it leads me to believe that I might not be so lucky.
Having the same problems here and I love how our local paper literally publishes articles every other day about how fast it's spreading, how dangerous it is for pg women, etc. when NO ONE has the vaccine. Talk about spreading mass hysteria. I've been contacted every day for the last 3 days by friends or family telling me how important it is I get it...which I totally appreciate it but I can't get it....makes me not want to leave the house until I do! Geesh!
MrsK... If I was in your situation, I'd probably do it too. You have a high level of exposure due to daycare, and that alone would make me think hard about it.
Because I don't have that kind of exposure, I'm going to skip all flu shots. I don't work outside of the home, and hubby is working from home between now and the end of the year, for the most part.
Plus, I'm almost "too" close to delivery now. Ped said it takes a good 2 weeks for any flu shot benefits to fully incorporate to the baby, so it's probably too late for me already. And in my area, H1N1 is still in pretty limited quantities.
Yes, I got the regular flu shot about 2 weeks ago. I was not able to get the Thimersol free H1N1...they didn't have it. I figured it is in such short supply around here that I just had to get what i could and hope for the best.
the nurse assured me that it is completely safe......still taking that with a grain of salt though.
IF I get the seasonal flu shot, it will not be until December, when I am in my second trimester.
I'd like to get the H1N1 in my second trimester, so hopefully it will be more available in my area then.
Good for you! I got mine and I have so much LESS anxiety not having to worry about getting sick when whole families around me are dropping off like flies getting ill.
For what it's worth (maybe not much, considering you don't even know me), but I applaud your decision. The complications of a bad H1N1 case are potentially way more devastating to you than the vaccine right now! And the process for making the vaccine is no different from making the seasonal shot -- it's a different virus strain, of course, but the seasonal show is made from different strains every year that SEEM to be the ones that would potentially crop up.
That said, you should feel good about protecting your family.
