DS just turned a year old. He doesn't really have any words. He babbles mama and dada but has only said mama to me a handful of times so I don't really count that as a word yet b/c it has not been consistent at all. However when you ask him what a cow says he does say moo. Does animal sounds count as words? Should I be worried by the fact that he is a year old and has no real words yet? He babbles a good bit although he does have his quiet days. He is just constantly pointing at everything which I think is adorable and he knows what everything is he just doesnt say anything yet. At his 1 year appt. the pedi didnt even ask about words so I am assuming that it is not expected quite yet?? It just seems that a lot of babies on here already have a lot of words by a year.
Re: Does "moo" count as a word?
It is both a noun, and a verb:

DH and I were having this debate before DD's last well visit. I said it didn't count and he said it did. Per our pedi it counts! She also said any signs she does count because although she is saying them out loud it shows comprehension.
DD has always been a talker, but she had a word explosion around 14 months and then again just after 18 months. Don't worry, the words will come at one year the babbling is the most important part!
