How much protein should I have?

Anyone know how much protein I need per day?

Re: How much protein should I have?

  • A booklet I got in my Multiples class says 115 g per day.  I am nowhere close.  :(

  • i never measured - i just ate as much as i could- which wasn't easy, esp in the first tri.

as long as you eat protein at almost every meal- you should be fine.

  • I can't help on exact number of grams, but it must be a lot because I have always eaten a good deal of protein since I worked out pretty intensely before getting pregnant.  Even with that diet, my MFM recommended the three protein shakes per day on top of it.  This is partly due to our having had the twin to twin transfusion issues, but she said their practice sees a lot of benefit in birth weights from having patients do it so it sort of sounded like she might have recommended it without the TTTS.

In case it is helpful, she also suggested I drink the whey protein powder mixed with milk instead of Ensure or such--because it is a ton cheaper, even higher in protein and lower in sugar.  My husband found a giant bag at Costco for a great price--it makes me laugh because it looks like a big fertilizer bag!

Wowzers.  I had no clue it was supposed to be THAT much!  I doubt that I get even half that.

  • I have GD so I have to eat protein with everything.  My dietician recommends 2 meat servings at lunch (6 oz) and 3 at dinner (9 oz).  Plus, servings of cheese at each meal (1-2 oz) and proteins from milk/vegetables.  HTH!
  • Wow I know I am not getting that much. Maybe i should swipe some my H's protein powder stuff.

I just went and got some vanilla whey protein powder tonight.  It has 20 grams of protein per serving.  I am going to try to make a shake every day.  I know I am not getting enough protein, especially since I am a vegetarian.  It just isn't as easy for me.

  • That's a really good question. I have heard 115 g a day before. I know one thing, i'm looking foward to the day when I don't have to feel bad for not getting enough of it!
  • I'm trying to remember. I think Dr. Luke's guidelines said 2 eggs a day plus 3 other servings of protein? (Plus 6-8 of dairy, so obviously that's some more protein.)

  • At my 34 wk appt, my peri advocated upping my protein as much as possible! So, basically protein with EVERY meal plus every protein shake or snack between meals. In the liquid shakes, he said to buy the ones that offered the most protein per bottle (brands didn't matter). Mine range from 15-20 g of protein per shake.Egg whites are an excellent source supposedly of protein too, but peri said that liquid forms of protein cross the placentas the best.

    HTH
