Anyone HAVE or know anyone who got transfusion for anemia?

SIL is in hospital with accelerated heart rate and crazy high BP....shes also anemic (but arent almost all women?)  She's been taking supplements but I guess not good enough because theyre suggesting a transfusion....Seems to drastic just to HEAR THE WORD transfusion....   Am I being naive??  They seem so dangerous...

My mom had several for anemia and I alllllmost had to. Things have gotten a lot safer over the years; the blood supply is closely monitored.

yes, anemia is super common, I am anemic but not as bad as my mother... It causes her to faint, but she's never had one. I would guess your SIL's is super severe if she needs one. Anemia is serious if really bad, I would agree most people have it to a degree, but Anemics have a short supply of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen through your body. So if your hemoglobin is too low there are serious outcomes... but no i haven't nor have i known anyone to be hospitalized for it... Good luck! T&P for your SIL

Thanks!  Well her level is a 5 and I did some research for adult women it should be 12-16....so does seem dangerously low.... but I had heard some people get shots to boost it...I was thinking maybe she could have that and then heavy supp's to maintain it.

I have and the twins almost did.  It really isn't a big deal at all and if I recall correctly they only use part of the blood... platelets.  It really is safe these days and isn't drastic at all.  I was tired a little afterward but by the next day I felt better b/c my anemia was resolving itself.
