Re: sterilizing w/thrush.

  • Thrush is a PAIN to get rid of you really have to think of everything. I read a book by Dr. Newman that rec everything be boiled each night for 30 minutes with a little bit of vinegar. Are you BFing? If you are you shoudl boil disposable breastpads & wash your bras & any other tops that come in direct contact with your nipples in a hot cycle with soem vinegar. Also if LO is getting Vit. D supplement or has receantly gotten any other med the dropper can also be infected. Good Luck. With meds for both L & I and some acidophlous fo rme it cleared up (and lots os boiling!)

ETA: sorry just saw you FF. Yup boil paci's as well. Add a little vinegar to the water.

  • Our pedi told me to boil the pacis for 10 minutes to sterilize. Just to be safe, I didn't give pacis or bottles again till I was sure the thush was gone, and because I didn't want to have to sterilize them after each use. HTH!
  • Boil anything that was in the baby's mouth when he had thrush. My doctor said to boil bottles + pacifiers every day until the treatment is finished. He said to boil them for 10-20 min a day.
  • Sorry,I just saw that you FF. I guess you have to use bottles! Was your LO given gentian violet? Our pedi swabbed my DD's mouth with it and by the next day, the thush was gone. Mine cleared up pretty fast with gentian violet on my nipples and Diflican pills. Since you're FF, I would think thrush is a little easier to clear up since you don't have to worry about mom and baby passing it back and forth. I strongly recommend gentian violet, though. You can get it without a prescription behind the counter at most pharmacies. It's messy and it will turn your LO's mouth purple for a day or two (hilarious, btw), but totally worth it!
  • I rotated his pacifier after every bottle so that it wasn't in his mouth too long (luckily we had quite a few pacifiers).  I washed them and then sterilized them in the microwave (or you can boil them for 10 minutes).  Also, any toy that goes in his mouth should be washed and sterilized too.
