I got several things from Etsy, many sellers on there have fabrics that are hard to find anywhere (definitely wouldn't find them at JoAnn's or Hancock)
However I would recommend googling the fabric name/designer/type or whatever once you see one you like. I did this just to see several different images to make sure the colors were right.
For instance I realized I liked Michael Miller fabrics, so I googled the name and looked at what all was out there before deciding on one.
When I buy online I usually use fabric.com (make sure to google a coupon code!) or when they don't have a particular item I google it, most recently got a hard a piece of hard to find yardage via etsy (it was out of stock nearly everywhere else).
Local quilt stores are a GREAT resource for cool cotton fabrics and seeing them in person is always helpful for me!
I'm into more modern fabrics than what you find at a Joann's type place. I love JCaroline. Great selection of lots of different fabrics. I also like the sellers MountainofaDragon and FabricWorm on Etsy. For vintage type fabrics, check out ReproDepot. And all these places have pretty good prices!

HTH!
I absolutely love Sew Mama. They have amazing fabrics and you can search by color, print, designer, etc.
