PSA: Cornbread mix that expired 2 years ago is NOT GOOD.

OMFG

DH made cornbread to go with our vegetable beef soup tonight.

He didn't bother looking at the date on the cornbread mix that he pulled from the bowels of the pantry.

We both took a bite at the same time. DH almost puked, I spit mine out and wiped my tongue with my napkin.

It was NOT GOOD.

Good news - DH learned his lesson.

  • lol... When my DH and I first got married, his mom cleaned out her pantry and gave us a few things. One of the items was a cake mix. We made it, came out flat. Tasted it, totally gross. Looked at the expiration date- umm, it was in the '80s, over 20 year old!! I didn't even know they put expiration date on things back then. Yikes MIL!!

  • OMG! 20 year old cake mix is SO way worse than 2 year old cornbread mix.

  • If you would have pt baking soda in it, it would have been like new!
  • LOL! I will keep this in mind, thank you :)

This would NOT have helped. It tasted disgusting. I still can't get the taste out of my mouth.

  • I had this vague memory of hearing a story of a boy who died after eating expired pancake mix from a allergy to the mold that had formed in it.  I looked it up and it looks legit.  Check it out:

I know before hearing this story I didn't think much about expiration dates on boxes like that...just thought they might taste off.  Now I'm much more careful about checking labels.  Yikes.
