I am so surprised someone else agrees with me that hard surface floors SUCK.  My entire house is hard surface - mostly tile and a few rooms are laminate "hardwoods."  While it mostly looks nice, it is a PITA to clean.  Everyone always says, "it's so EASY to keep clean" and I'm like NO!  I think what they mean is, rarely do you experience any stains and if something spills it's just a matter of wiping it up, unlike carpet.  But as for day-to-day cleaning, carpet is so much easier.

We recently bought a GINORMOUS rug for our living room (24' by 24') and love it.  So much easier to vacuum and I don't care if I'm in denial that we are collecting more dirt/dog hair than when it was just tile.  )

And nothing warms up a home like a little carpet, IMO.

Ugh! I know. And the floors are so freezing! I have to wear socks from October to April here. And I hate socks.
