We have big wrought iron gates on our front and back doors (we live in the middle of the city with ground floor doors, and our doors are glass). They have deadbolts on both sides because you could reach around and unlock them if they had latches.
I went to throw something in our recycling, and it bounced out. I went to pick it up, but I pulled the door closed behind me to keep the cats from getting out. I just happened to turn the knob on our front door to make sure it was unlocked, even though we never use that lock. Thank goodness I checked, because it was locked (the cleaning lady must have locked it today). If I'd locked myself out, I would have been trapped in between our front door and this gate.
I can't breathe just thinking about it. There's plenty of room to move around, but it's freezing, I didn't have my phone, and I have a flight to catch in less than two hours. Our street is busy, so I'm sure I could have found someone to help me at least call DH within a few minutes, but I'm still panicking at the thought.
As a side note, we were already planning to have the gates modified so we could have a regular lock (hello, safety issue), but DH is going to call tomorrow instead of "before the baby comes."
