Uncontrolable crying because of diaper rash?

DD has not stopped crying for the past hour.  I cannot get her to stop.  This has been happening for 4 days, since she has had a bad diaper rash and diarrhea.  I brought it up to the ped today when she went in for her flu shot and he said just put lidocain on it.  Well I have been for four days.  Has your DC uncontrollably cried because of this?  We've tried everything, bathing for long periods of time, airing it out, creams, I feel so bad for her.

Re: Uncontrolable crying because of diaper rash?

  • Miles' diaper rashes have never lasted that long.  Poor little gal!  I would call your pedi back and tell them lidocain isn't cutting it and she's in pain.  My pedi prescribed "magic butt cream" which is just balmex, hydrocortisone cream and some anti-fungal cream that the pharmacist mixes into a cream.  It worked wonders for Miles.  He had diaper rash once that was almost blistered...it was terrible.

  • We battled awful diaper rash on and off for a month.  I can imagine lidocaine isn't helping at all - that seems like a dumb thing for him to have recommended.  Prescription anti-fungal cream (nystatin) or you can use OTC anti-fungal cream like Lotrimin (because by now it IS yeasty, doesn't take much for that to take hold, almost all diaper rash is yeasty)  - coupled with Triple Paste - will give her some much needed relief.  Rub the lotrimin in/on the affected area - and then SLATHER on the triple paste - all over and right up to the opening of little bumhole.  Triple Paste is pricey but worth every penny.  Go get some NOW (and the lotrimin) - she'll feel so much better.

  • Oh - and as much naked butt time as possible - this will REALLY help too.  No diaper = no diaper rash.  Good Luck!!!

  • something's not right...  does she scream with the cream? or just in general? I'd call them back and get something else. Davez is in route somewhere but email me later and I'll see what he says they make for raw butts.  I know stuff with the white pigment, name escapes me, can make it worse. zinc. yeah, skip anything with zinc in it for a while.

  • ditto LucyP ?- pick up some Triple Paste. I got a small tube in Target for less than $10. I wanted to try it - It works! The big-ass tub is $30.
  • Sorry, chiming back in and disagreeing with Davez - zinc is a huge component of the good creams - including Triple Paste.  I think it's the lidocaine that isn't doing diddly squat for her - she needs some kind of zinc oxide barrier cream.

  • Calmoseptine.  It's what they use at the hospital when your skin is falling off... from stuff like bedsores or incredible horrible diaper rash from IV antibiotics (that's what Jack needed it for)

It's OTC (no RX necessary) but you do get it from the pharmacy counter... just ask the pharmacist.

It's zinc + menthol... has antifungal and antibacterial properties... it heals and provides a barrier to moisture.

And it feels like heaven... kind of tingly and cool and then numbs.

Bout 10 bucks per tube.  Worth about $1000.

  • I see everyone is recommending zinc based creams...but I have an odd child and maybe you do too haha.

No cream is the only way for Luke's diaper rash to get better once it gets bad, which happens instantly with a runny poop of any kind.

So I do as much diaperless time as possible...and I mean as much as you can.  And I give him a 1/4 - 1/2 dose of tylenol (depends on how bad the diaper rash is) to take the edge off of the pain...works wonders.  But the more cream I put on him, the longer it takes to go away.

Also don't use wipes, just use warm wet paper towels.

LucyP, I'm a dumbass, he said Lotrimin not lidocain, big difference.  We've been using A&D ointment for 4 days now.

  • Lucy, you can disagree all you want with me, cuz I love ya.

But zinc creams do make rashes worse for some skins. Just sayin' ;-P

C - I thought that was a bit weird you were doing lido for 4 days... I was going to email you about the dangers of heart palps... lol.

I recognize the name H&B gave ya... I'd try that. Poor gal.

  • Right back atcha D-dub!

And the calmoseptine sounds like a plan (but my plan works too!)

Meantime - the lotrimin is good - the A&D not so much.  You need more of a barrier/soother than that.  Try the calmo or the Triple Paste (keep using the lotrimin if you go the triple paste route.  I do heart Triple Paste - it was the only thing the finally helped us turn the corner after a weeks long battle.  Lots of no diaper time too.)

GL!!  Update me later!  On baby's poor hiney.  Sad

  • One other thing to add to this...when Ryan has had a horrible diaper rash we stop using baby wipes.  You can get these cotton pads (like 2X3 inches) that are like the round cotton makeup remover pads, warm water, and let dry totally.  I get mine at CVS.
  • Oh God yes - NO WIPES!!  I just used baby washcloths and warm water - the wipes are too harsh on diaper rash (and can make it worse.)

    Hope she's doing better already!

  • Poor baby!!!  We've never had that happen.  I hope it gets better soon!
