Toddlers: 24 Months+

Boring, but I gotta ask.

When did you switch to flouride toothpaste?  I was rushing at Target and picked up the first bigger tube of toothpaste I saw with Dora on it.  (Those non-flouride paste tubes are just sooo small.)

So I am wondering if it's waaay too soon to use the big girl toothpaste.

Also, how long did it take for your LO to figure out the whole "spit" thing.

Re: Boring, but I gotta ask.

  • We don;t use flouride toothpase yet. I think we will get DS1 some next time he needs new toothpaste.

As far as the spitting thing goes, DS1 is 4 1/2 and he just got the spitting out thing a little bit ago. We are working on trying to teach DS2, but he just doesn't get it yet. Don't know if this is typical, or just my boys. :)

  • We use flouride-free toothpaste.  DS doesn't get the whole spitting thing.
  • LOL. Have you been reading my FB status?! Ha ha ha. DS is a good spitter. He gets his little paper cup of water, takes some in his mouth, and spits. Sometimes it ends up on the mirror, other times all over the counter. :) Since they say it's okay to use fluoride toothpaste once they are 2, we decided to give it a shot. We bought two different kinds, that DS ended up hating. I finally got one Friday that he tasted and he said he liked. Well, now I'm paranoid that he's still too young. I bought two more tubes of the fluoride-free toddler toothpaste with the bear on it today! I think I'm gonna put away the other stuff for a while, take DS to the dentist and see what she thinks.

My nephew was told by his dentist that he needs to be using fluoride toothpaste...but he's 4.

  • Haha yes I read your fb status! I thought of you when I posted this. I am also nervous that she should not use this stuff yet.
  • We use flouride free for now.
  • Fluoride-free here, too. Don't want her to get those white spots/stains on her teeth from too much fluoride. She drinks her water after brushing... cant get the rinsing and spitting thing yet. She saw her dentist for the 1st time a few months ago, and he said to keep with the fluoride-free. He did a fluoride treatment on her teeth that he says lasts 6 months.
  • no flouride here.  dentist did a treatment today.

plus, your water is probably fluoride treated.

Our water in my city is not fluoride treated enough to help prevent cavities (level is too low). However, you can check the level in your local water by reading your water districts web site. GL!

  • I still have not switched and my older DD is 3 years 4 months. You can switch when you child no longer swallows the toothpaste - they need to be really good about spitting.
