Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Can someone explain sip cups at 6 months?

I have never heard of them that early until the bump.

All of the kids I know, which is quite a few, waited until 12 months.

Six  months just seems like it's rushing it to me.

I will be talking to dds pedi to see if there is a reason to start that early, if not, I will be waiting till her 1st birthday.

  • I was thinking the exact same thing!

  • My SIL gave her DS a sippy couple at about that age, it was more of a toy then a way to drink.  She'd put a little juice and just let him play with it.

My pedi said we could start when we had her 4 month. It's up to the parent.

Why is one yr the magic number? Just curious.

  • they are just for practice that early...
  • DS is always grabbing at out cups at restaurant's and chewing on our straws so we gave him a sippy cup of ice so that he could keep immitating us but stop spilling our soda's. This imitation was also part of the reason we started solids a bit early too. Not the only reason but it did help that he really seemed to want to eat like us. Now he LOVES the solids he's on. He also loves to chew on ice in the mesh feeders. He eats his ice while we eat our food-godsend for when he was teething too.

  • I would never have thought of giving a 6 month ols a sippy cup but every single book I read says to start a cup at 6 months old, some books say not to use a sippy cup it just takes the place of a bottle but to use an actual cup.  The reason is for them to get used to the cup to prevent tooth decay.
  • Apparently I was weaned to a sip cup at 7 months because I would NOT take a bottle.  My mom had to be away from me for a week and had no choice.

I guess because that is what I'm used to. All of my friends have done it with their kids, and thats what my mom did with me and all 3 of my siblings.

I just can't get over 6 months seeming so young. But, like I said, I will talk to the pedi.

Dd doesn't want our cups as much as she wants our food. lol.

  • I was told with #1 I could try and introduce at 6 months.  I would let DD play with it just to get the feel of it.  At that point I could have cared less if she actually drank from it.

  • My DS has refused all bottles since he was 6 weeks old.  If I can get him to drink from a cup, I'm all for it!

    Haha, right!

We let her have it with a little water. She more so plays with it than anything.
