Preemies

vitamin ?

My DD was prescribed polyvisol with iron when she left the NICU.  Initially we mixed it with her bottles of EBM, but now she is BF (actually refusing bottles now-so that option is out).  We then put it in a medicine dropper mixed w/milk and she would suck it out.  Now (11 weeks old) she will spit it out and if she swallows some by accident, she will dry heave and vomit (A LOT).  She also vomitted on the tylenol given to her from the pedi at her 2 month appt.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Do you think she just doesn't like the taste, or could it be a sensitive gag reflex (she will sometimes dry heave if given a bottle or the paci she took in NICU)?  I just don't understand why now she is so sensitive to things other than my breast in her mouth--when she was fine before!!

Re: vitamin ?

  • It could just be the extra iron.  DD used to do the same thing and we stopped the vitamins with iron.  We started them again about a month a half ago and she would wake up screaming a few hours after she got them.  I guess the extra iron bothers her belly. When we went to the pedi last week she told us that the regular vitamins are fine. She gets plenty of iron so they weren't concerned.

Have you tasted the vitamins?  They are awful.  I don't blame the babies for not liking them!

  • My DD was doing the same thing for a while. Could be a sensitive gag reflex. We give her vitamins in a dropper while she's BFing. We stick the dropper into the corner of her mouth (while she still on the breast and sucking) and slowly give the vitamins bit by bit. Maybe that will help!
