new here -- questions about doctors and hospitals

i'm new to the bump and i'm really excited that there's a chicago-area group...  because some of my questions on other forums have been location-specific and difficult for people to answer if they're in other areas of the country!  i'm located in the western 'burbs, in downers grove.

i'm thinking about switching my ob/gyn, because my current one seems disorganized and less-than-helpful (when asked if they had thimerosal/preservative-free vaccines, they said, "what's that?").  here are my questions:

anyone have experience with delivering at good samaritan versus hinsdale adventist?

recommendations for doctors at either hospital?  i've heard great things about west suburban women's health, but they don't take my insurance. i'd prefer a doc in downers, but i'd go to neighboring 'burbs -- hinsdale, lombard, oakbrook) if needed.

thanks in advance!

Re: new here -- questions about doctors and hospitals

  • I LOVE Hinsdale Adventist.  I received the most phenomenal care from them.  I just recently had my daughter in June at Adventist Hinsdale with the midwives through West Suburban.  Hindale is wonderful with large and spacious birthing rooms, one on one nursing during labor, and a complimentary massage the day after giving birth.  You won't regret going with Hinsdale.  You should ask West Suburban to recommend another place that might that your insurance.

  • I also loved Hinsdale.  My OB (Dr Pamela Dorne - she has an office in Hinsdale) practices there and at West Suburban (about 1 mile from my house in Oak Park) and we went all the way to Hinsdale because it's just so much nicer.

The nurses were wonderful and I only ever had to tell one of them that I wanted to go natural - no one pressured me to take meds even as I was getting sick.  One of my nurses was also a lamaze instructor and all of them were comforting.  The final nurse (I went through 4 while in labor) actually stayed more than 2 hours past her end-of-shift to help me recouperate and move to my stay-in room.  I think she felt bad b/c DS had to go to the NICU and she could tell I was upset.

So, yes, I'd say Hinsdale is the best.

  • My ob is out of Good Sam - DuPage Medical Group.  I've seen both Dr. Wolowick and Dr. Mitchell.  They're great.  I've heard great things about DMG's peds practice too.

  • I delivered at Hinsdale. I felt the care was great. For us i think what was best for us was that it was so close to home.  I think that should be something to consider. Our little guy was in the NICU for a week and it made treaking back and forth much easier because i was trying to nurse since nicu have various visiting hours (even for parents). I have also found the support the LC are great there and really enjoyed the group they had for breastfeeding.

I do agree the nurse are wonderful. I also wanted to go natural too. However in my case the nursee did support me with it until her and the doctor did talk to me about pain meds. I am soo glad they did encourage me with the epi since my case the induction was not going smoothly. Also I was almost going to have to have a c section and i would have needed the epi in for. My nurse stay past her shift to help and i am so glad she did. i really feel that hinsdale was a great experience (even though my birth experience was not normal)

  • I am answering this one late so sorry!   I also delivered at Hinsdale and loved it.   They were amazing and so comforting.    My nurse literally stayed with me the whole night, my epi was one sided and she did not want to see me in pain!   She did not leave until I had delivered (well past her shift)

I would never go anywhere else as a result of it.    My Doc Dr. Yu works in oakbrook he is an obgyn that specializes in infertility and is just the most amazing man, literally I can't say enough about him!

I hope you find (if you decide to go) that Hinsdale is a wonderful place.    If you can, ask for carolyn she is the nurse that we had, the best!

    Good luck
