So how do I time contractions? I know, I know that I should probably know this but I don't

That's what I used too. It was fabulous.
interval-- from start of contraction a to start of contraction b, etc.
length-- from start of contraction a to end of contraction b...
So, for instance, contractions 5 minutes apart at 45 seconds long would really mean that from the end of the first contraction, 4 minutes and 15 seconds passed until the start of the next.
