Pregnant after 35

First Trimester Screen results

Were screen negative!?

They gave me a less than 2 percent chance of having down syndrome. The genetic counselor said these were reassuring results. My chances based on age alone had been greater than 2 percent. (However, the test only flags 85 percent of down syndrome cases, they estimate)

I have to make a decision by Monday now on the CVS test. ?I'm 40 and I definitely want a diagnostic test, but I can't decide between CVS and the amnio.?

The facility quotes a miscarriage rate of 1 in 300 for CVS.?

?

  • Because I've already probably pissed enough people off today, I'll just refer you to the post right ahead of you for my cranky rant on amnio and/or CVS and the whole "need to know" debate.

But do the math.... you're talking about a 98% chance that you're just fine.  If you were in Vegas, you'd be taking that bet.

  • BrideBuddies, you are not going to piss me off. It takes a lot more than that to do it.?

(The 98 percent chance is correct IF the screen caught all cases which it doesn't). I'm not trying to start a debate. I know the odds are good. The bottom line for me is I want a diagnostic test. I'm just trying to decide which one.

  • <3, Bridebuddies!  Your opinion on this doesn't piss me off either, just so you know.  I just have a different point of view.  :)

  • Different ppl have different opinions on this topic.  It does tend to be a pretty touchy topic.  DH and I opted for the CVS for reasons I have already posted in the past week, so I won't state them again.  We got our results back yesterday -- we now know with 99.9% accuracy that our baby does not have chromosome abnormalities, at least with regards to the chromosomes examined.  I saw the baby two days ago on U/S.  She looks great, her HB is 164 bpm, and she was moving around and being very active.  We are happy we did the CVS and got a diagnosis, not just risk numbers.  But, that was our personal decision.

Before we made our decision to do CVS, our genetic counselor asked what risk numbers would I be happy with if we do the NT screening.  I said 1/500.  But, when she told us that the NT screens only 75% of possible abnormalities, we didn't want to leave 25% unknown b/c I have a family history of Down's.  That, coupled with a negligible chance of m/c, made the decision for us.

If you think you will worry throughout your PG about this issue, then go for the CVS.  It was a very easy and safe procedure for me.  Just my two cents!

I'm sorry, I must have overlooked your real question, which is CVS v. amnio.  At my dr's office, the risk of m/c for a CVS are the same as that for amnio -- TINY (my dr is really good!).  DH and I are not exactly the most patient ppl -- we wanted to know sooner than later.  So, since there was no increased risk, the CVS was the way to go for us.

  • In our case, CVS wasn't an option because of the location of the placenta -  they couldn't really get to it for the CVS. At the office we used the CVS statistics were about the same, it was just a matter of timing. We were glad we did it.

  • I just wanted to say congratulations on your numbers.  We had really good numbers as well and decided not to do CVS or Amnio.  Good luck with whatever you decide.
