IUGR moms

I was just wondering if any of you had your placenta sent to a pathologist and what, if anything, they found.

My son was born at 35 weeks and was always small due to IUGR.  My OB sent my placenta to a specialist to be analyzed and the results just got back.  I have an apt. with my peri on Nov. 5th to go over them.  I don't know why but I am actually very nervous to find out.  All I know so far is that they did find evidence of malprofusion but my OB didn't know how to read the report since it's the peri's job to do so.

TIA!

Re: IUGR moms

  • I had 1 IUGR twin and 1 not IUGR twin, and they shared a placenta. It was sent off to pathology, and basically all the report said was that the lobe my IUGR twin was attached to was starting to fail while the other lobe wasn't. It didn't say what caused the failure, just that it was aged and starting to calcify. It was a big let down - I was hoping that all of the answers to the mysteries of my complicated pregnancy would be revealed, but no such luck.

{{{hugs}}}  I hope you're able to get more answers than I did.

  • They sent mine off but I really didn't get answers..

This.  They kinda just said they couldn't find anything.

  • Mine was sent off as well, but again, I really didn't have any answers.  It just proved that it quit functioning properly.  Good luck.
  • My labs weren't sent to a specialist just the regular pathology dept in the hospital.  My medical records say "the placenta was abnormally  adhered to the uterine wall and was eventually delivered using gentle maneuvers and ring forceps" and that's it.  But my OB said that he talked to the path dr. and they said there were some major clots throughout the placenta and umbilical but nothing that could indicate why Evan's IUGR was so severe.  I guess we'll never really know.  I was also told that the likelyhood of my having another IUGR baby, especially if I have multiples again, is very very high.
