PSA: Fabric softener

Maybe everyone else already knows this. but I didn't so I'm just putting it out there.

"When you pre-wash your baby items before baby comes home, do not use fabric softener on these items. Fabric softener may reduce flame resistance when used on children?s sleepwear or other garments labeled as flame resistant."

Re: PSA: Fabric softener

  • I guess I thought the fabric softener people had remedied that years ago?

Not sure I have anything that's flame resistant-treated, anyway.  Most of my stuff is just plain cotton, etc.

  • I'm going to be the sourpuss here, but I have heard that rumor and kind of disregarded it.

At first I only used Dreft (Target version, that is) without softener, but once I knew he wasn't a sensitive baby I started using softener again.

The way I figured it is that if there is a fire THAT CLOSE to my baby, then having used fabric softener is probably the least of my problems.

I am not trying to sound like a wiseguy. Honest!!  Embarrassed

  • Hi Mommies-to-be,

If you don't want to use softener you can use wool dryer balls. I made some and they cut our drying time in half, soften the clothes and reduces or eliminates static cling. The instructions are below if you are interested.
