does your child ever embarrass you?

The past few times ds has been around my parents he has been so bad He doesn't want to give hugs and has been rude. Today my mom took ds and I out to dinner and he decided before the food came he wanted to leave and threw a fit. To the point where he was trying to bite me. Of course we finished quickly and left. He lost his tv show at home and was upset about that but knew why he lost it. The rest of the night he was as sweet as pie. Is this part of the wtf 3s I keep reading about. How di you cope?

Re: does your child ever embarrass you?

  • Ha - YES. We had lunch out the other day and he had a massive freakout about leaving. Then yesterday we were walking down the street and some guy passed us and said "hey, I saw you guys at the restaurant the other day!" LOL - I guess we made an impression.

Also, the day we were on the subway and he turned to the man behind us and started laughing, then pointed and yelled "you have a funny face!"

And the time in Costco that we attempted to put him in timeout in the store (bad idea) and he just kept yelling "I farted! I farted! Mama did you hear? I farted!". I think all the people around us thought we actually put him in timeout for farting....funny in retrospect, but at the time I was mortified.

  • It happens, and yes, it started happening around 3 yrs old.  I think it's just a battle of wills.  As far as giving hugs and stuff, I don't push it.  She usually comes around, once she knows she doesn't *have* to give a hug.  As far as the restaurant thing, I think you did the right thing.  I guess the alternative would be taking him to the bathroom and letting him know that if he does such-and-such anymore during the evening, he'll be in big trouble later.  It's hard...they are so freakin headstrong sometimes!

  • My DD mostly embarrasses me with things that she repeats.  Like today, a guy from church delivered flowers to our house.  The only things she said to him were, "Meow has fleas.  She has fleas alllll osher (over) her!"  Ugh.  Yes, the cat had fleas, but we don't need to advertise that fact!

A couple of nights ago, we were talking about tattoos while we were out eating.  DD asked us if our server had tattoos.  DH said that he didn't, but I made the mistake of saying (to DH), "What if he has one on his butt?  You should ask him."  When the server came back, DD asked the guy if he had a tattoo on his butt.  Woopsie.
