i ...i forget what it's called..something initalled.. ERT or something?  early result test?  an u/s done between 11-14 weeks or something where they measure something in the back of the neck?  does anyone know about this?

NT Scan?

i just grabbed the paperwork now that i'm home - it's an "early risk assessment" test - ERA (i got 2 out of 3 of the letters, lol) and what they measure at the u/s is the nuchal translucency which is the flued in the back of the neck during a specific gestational window of time.  apparently this allows them to detect some sort of risk probability or something i dunno??

u/s for nuchal translucency = NT Scan

We never did any type of screening or early testing because we knew that no matter what we would continue with the pregnancy. Just my $0.02.

This and the blood tests (quad screen, I believe) will give your your likelihood of certain genetic disorders. Then, if you are high risk they suggest an amnio for genetic testing to be sure. Then, you'd have to decide where to go from there.

If you decide to do these things check with your insurance about coverage on this. Someone on the boards got a CF test and it wasn't covered by insurance. It cost something like $1500!!!!

I had my NT scan mostly because:

    1) it was 100% covered by my insurance

    2) I got to see my baby again =)

NT was just an u/s + finger prick for blood drops. I believe it checks for downs markers & trisomy (8 & 13?) markers. Also, if you get a "positive" result, it just places you in a higher risk category and is NOT an indication that anything is WRONG. You will just get sent to genetic counseling & most likely come home after finding out baby is 100% ok.

I also did the quad screen because it was 100% covered. That was 12 vials of blood, but I survived & it was very reasuring to know everything came back normal.

I, too, knew that no matter what I would continue with the pregnancy, so that didn't factor into having the tests done. I like milking my insurance for whatever they will give me :)

^^This. I would not have terminated the pregnancy if anything came up that might have suggested that our babies had downs but if you can get on board with another ultrasound and your insurance will cover it - I say go for it! I never turn down the NT scan!
