We use warm mist because we live in a cold environment AND because it helps immensely with stuffy noses and such - especially when they are so small that there's almost nothing else you can do for them. It is also very cozy in the winter - especially if oyu have forced hot air heat which dries things out terribly.
The rumor that you "should" get cold mist is only related to safety - and that's for when baby is much older. When baby can crawl and walk, you don't want them getting their hands into the steam vent of the humidifer.
My son is almost 2, and we plan to still use the warm mist so long as he is confined to a crib every night. Once he is in a bed and can roam freely, we will switch to cool mist in his room.
I'm in arid, chilly Colorado where we have 10% humidity, so I guess the warm would be better than cold... also since Baby is arriving at the start of the winter months.
I doubt much that'd it'd be used much except for cases of illness, etc. so I guess just keeping it up and out of little hands would be key down the road.

Re: Vaporizer/humidifier recs?
I was told cool mist, so that is what I went with....but this is my first so I don't have any first-hand knowledge...

Redsox... good point about the cool vs. warm.
