prenatal vitamin question?

I bought prenatal vitamins from dominicks and they are very hard for me to swallow....i just got this new kind today from walgreens, Finest Natural DHA Complete Dietary Supplement.  Is this an ok one to take?

Re: prenatal vitamin question?

  • Most of the prenatal vitamins have similar ingredients.  Just make sure you are taking one with the recommended amounts of folic acid.  I had my docotr prescribe me a generic one and I got it through the pharmacy for $4.00 a month.  Could be worth checking out.  Also your OB will have tons of samples--so ask for them.

  • yes, ask your doctor for samples!  we got more than a month's worth of prenatal vitamins that way -- and most of them seemed pretty good, worth getting a prescription for.  the main thing is that they should have 1 mg of folic acid and if you're going with DHA, try to get plant-based or no-mercury supplements.  if you're having trouble digesting them, look at the iron content... sometimes higher iron can make you feel sick.

  • Definitely ask your OB for samples. Mine gave me a couple boxes of "citra-natal assure" that came with a coupon for $10 off your co-pay for 10 months. I've had no problems with the vitamins and I'm getting them all FOR FREE.

  • Does anyone know how soon I need to start taking prenatal vitamins? Just found out yesterday that I'm pregnant, but my doctor's appointment isn't until Nov 9. I Have been taking folic acid every day for years, but do I need to start right away on prenatals too?
