XP: Moby Wrap vs Peanut Shell Sling

I posted this on 0-3 but am not getting many responses. They must get these questions a lot. :)

If you could only buy one (and with the price of them it's looking like that for me) which would you purchase for long term use? The majority of the time I would use it around the house and while doing errands to avoid taking the carseat in and out of the car. Thank you!!

Re: XP: Moby Wrap vs Peanut Shell Sling

  • I like this question and would like to see the responses.  I currently have both of these on my registry.

  • slings that only go over one shoulder can really irk your back. I prefer the Moby, but they are also very warm and might not be comfortable to you indoors. Gypsy Mama and Baby K'Tan (sp) make light weight wraps that are just awesome (if a little pricey).
  • I have also heard that the one-shoulder slings can be uncomfortable. Wraps distribute weight more evenly and can be used for toddlers, while I can't really see a toddler wanting to lie in a sling.

You might want to XP on the AP board since there are a lot of babywearers with carrier experience there.

Thank you - I took your suggestion on that!

  • i had a moby wrap and hated it, i know most people love them, but i just didnt. i did like me peanut shell style one last time round ( i have an actualy peanut shell one this time) BUT i would look into a baby hawk mei tai  before you make any final decisions. they are great as well. a little easier to use than the moby IMO.
  • I have a Moby and LOVE it.  I love the versatility and I was able to wear C for hours at a time without a problem.

BabyHawks are really nice.  I'd kill for an Ergo!

  • I had a peanut shell sling for DS and I loved it. I have a bad back so I wouldn't have used it once he got to a a certain size, even if I hadn't gotten pregnant so I can't really attest to it for long term use. I've played with the Moby and honestly, I felt a little like an idiot-lots of wrapping and I didn't feel terribly secure. DS was a summer baby too so it would've been a little heavier than I'd have liked.
  • I just got a hardly used moby wrap at a consignment sale for $30. I have no idea how it works but I really hope it comes in handy. With two other kids I'd really like my hands free more while baby is little. I used the BABY BJORN religious with both my other girls but they had to be a bit older to go into that.
  • most people i know that are really busy and active hated the moby wrap because, while it is very versatile, it is kind of a pain in the butt to wrap.  The peanut is awesome.  you just tuck the kid in  - super easy.
  • A couple of people have told me that they really only used their Moby's in the first few months and then found that they were too stretchy for a bigger baby.  With my son, I was able to use a Hotsling, similar to a Peanut Shell, every day until he was about 9-10 months old.   He was a very big kid, so if he was more "normal" sized, it probably could have gone longer.

  • First of all, who says you can't have both?  I'd look at consignment stores or on craigslist first.  You can probably get both of them gently used for the same price as one of them new.  A lot of babies don't like certain types of slings, so craigslist is full of great "my baby hated the sling" or "I can't figure out how to tie the Moby" deals.  Most of these have only been used two or three times before the mom gave up.  That said, here are my thoughts:

With DS, I had a Peanut Shell.  Generally, I really liked it.  It was great for running errands, quick and easy to put on, etc.  However, it was not great for wearing him around the house to do chores where you have to bend much.  GREAT for grocery shopping though.

I just "made" a Moby to use with Baby #2, and I've tested it with DS.  I think it will be much better for around the house, better to try to BF in, etc.  (I can't sew or anything, apparently all you have to do to "make" a Moby is buy jersey fabric (t-shirt material) and cut it to 20" wide.  You don't have to sew it or anything, because jersey doesn't fray, and it was less than half the cost of a "real" Moby.  I did it and looked up videos on how to wear it on youtube.)

  • I'd say get one of each as well. If you aren't picky about the patterns on the peanut shell, their website sells grab bag ones for $10 or $14 for the reversible. I ordered one of each. Oh, and I found a 25% coupon code: ps2009

I'm curious about the moby wrap but my sister is such an advocate of the one shoulder sling I figured I'd try it out first and change if I had any problems.

  • We registered for both since I obviously have no clue which one will work better for us.
