I saw the perinatologist. She saw my seven fibroids and told me there are four possibilities: (1) The baby is crowded by the fibroids, so although it may go to full term, it will be smaller than it would have been without fibroids, e.g. my baby would have been 6 lbs, but it will be only 4.5 lbs. The baby will not deformed, just smaller. (2) The placenta is attached to a fibroid, so they are both competing for nutrients and oxygen. The dr will monitor the baby, and if it stops growing, they will do a c-section. (3) The placenta detaches from the lining. In this scenario, I would need an emergency c-section. (4) Preterm labor happens because of too much crowding and/or incompetent cervix. I will see the perinatalogist every two weeks through week 28, then I will see her every week thereafter. She will measure the baby, the fibroids and my cervix every two weeks and weigh the baby every month and report all the findings to my OB, whom I will also be seeing every two weeks.
The dr said there is a high possibility of a c-section in my future b/c there are two fibroids blocking the birth canal, and they may not move out of the way. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed for possibility #1 with a vaginal delivery!
Ugh, ugh, ugh.
Okay, so for the good news: cervix is measuring 5 cm, which is really good, so apparently, the possibility of an incompetent cervix should be the least of my worries, and the baby looks good with a HB of 164.
I am going to post this on high-risk PG board to see if anyone has experience with this condition.
Re: Fibroids. Super ugh.
I am so sorry you are having to face all of this! It sounds like you have a great team of doctors.
I'll keep my fingers & toes crossed for you too!
I've had 2 c-sections though and will have another with this baby. It might not be what you want but you will do great if it comes to a c-section!!
Yay for the good news!!
Oh I hope none of those possibilities plays out and you are able to go full ter m with a big healthy baby. I'm glad they are monitoring you closely.
Do they plan to remove the fiborids after you have the baby?
Just saw this post today. I want to add another possibility... (5) None of the bad possibilities happen and you have an uneventful pregnancy and and an uneventful birth.
My OB and I just had the c-section talk yesterday because of mine. It's great of him to warn me and get me used to the idea, but by no means am I confined to that decision. I am taking a wait and see attitude. Maybe everything will be great and I will get to deliver vaginally.
Fingers crossed for you that those buggers aren't an issue... even though they are trying to gang up on you
