Preemies

If your baby was born between 24-25 weeks?

How long was he/she in the NICU?  What did you find helpful or need most from family and friends?  I ask because DH's coworker just had her baby tonight at 24.5 weeks.  We wanted to get or do something for her and her family.  Any suggestions?  Gift cards, dinner or food brought to their house?  We want to help but not bother them.  TIA!

  • My little one was born at 26 weeks. My sister's co-workers got us gift cards to restuarants that were near the hospital. I thought that was very nice since you get sick of the hospital cafeteria food!

  • Not always, but typically preemies go home sometime around their due date.  My guess would be that they have 3 long months ahead of them in the NICU.  I agree with pp about restaurant gift cards.  Gas cards are always a good idea too.  Those gifts are thoughtful and useful, but not too intrusive.

  • Our DD came home about one week before her due date, which was a total of 96 days in the NICU.  I remember that I really appreciated that everyone at work was thinking about us, and not upset with me for being off work for so long and so abruptly.  I got one large collection of cash that was great because I could use it however I wanted.  Refer your friend to our board, too!  This was a lifesaver for me.  :)

  • My angel was born at 26 weeks and the doctors told us that we could expect her home about 2 weeks before or after her due date. She came home 2 weeks after her due date almost to the day. We really appreciated gift cards to Target and Babies R us or just plain old cash. It also helped knowing we were in people's prayers. People we barely knew had Angelina in their hearts and prayers and that made is feel great.

  • Our baby was born at 26w and was in the hospital almost 3 weeks past his due date. I would expect the baby to be there beyond it's due date (and hopefully it will come home sooner!!)

I'm sure anything you do they will appreciate!!!  The thing we appreciated most was meals and/or gift cards for food!

  • My babies were born at 25w5d and were in tht NICU for 95 and 99 days. Visa gift cards were the greatest things for us. We used them for meals and gas. Meals brought to the house were always appreciated too. Just think practical and you can't go wrong! It's nice of you to think of them.

  • my lo was born on July 4 at 24.5 and is due home around Christmas-about 6 mos totaly stay.  :(    The home by due date doesn't necessarily hold true for micropreemies.  I've really appreciated calls, emails, cards-just people letting me know that they realize I'm still in the middle of all this.  Also, micro preemie clothes, preemie clothes, a zacky, sleep sheep-nicu appropriate stuff.

  • the best gift you can give is the gift of congratulating them. i think people dont know what to say and dont make it as much of a celebration. thats the one thing i missed out on the most. if she is still in the hospital bring her a little something as a congrats and giftcards for gas and food are great. also, maybe a couple of soft blankets. i know that was really the first thing i could bring the baby and i would wear them around on me to get my smell and then they would put them on his bed. little notes are great too.

very good point, now that you mention it!

  • aaron was born at 24w5d. he spent 118 days in the nicu and came home 11 days after his due date. i found it helpful when i didn't have to worry about dinner so gift cards/cooked meals are always a good idea. also, i enjoyed just having some company there when i spent hours there (DH worked full time). gl her family. it's a long road but the little ones are such strong fighters!
  • I agree with the pp, That with the micro preemies the due date is not always a realistic expectation. We were in the the NICU for 126 days, and we got out 19 days after his EDD.

For us, Gas cards, restaurant gift card or gift cards to baby places are always nice, and very appreciated.
