Constipated baby - help!

My 3 week old has been constipated from the formula. The doctor recommends 6oz of water per day, dark karo syrup, and just give it time to work (2-3 weeks).  The water doesnt noticeably help, the karo syrup might help a little.  We havent tried meds yet, the dr didnt want to put her on anything this early.  What do you do for your constipated baby that grunts and screams when they push (and nothing comes out)?

Re: Constipated baby - help!

  • My DD was constipated off and on during the first month.  When she was able to have a BM it was too formed for her age and difficult for her to pass.  During the first few weeks we used glycerin suppositories though not more than a few times per our pedi.  We also did water, 1 oz 3x per day between feedings.  That seemed to help temporarily but eventually stopped.  The cure-all for DD was prune juice.  Our pedi recommended 1oz of prune juice with 1oz of water every other day as needed.  We haven't used it in almost 3 weeks and she is having atleast 1 BM every day, sometimes more.  Call your pedi about other tricks besides water.

  • Have you tried taking his/her temperature rectally? I hear that can sometimes stimulate a bowel movement.

  • My doctor recommended laying DS on his back, and providing some gentle resistance against his feet, so he has something to push against.  I can't say it helped immensely, but he's started pooping again.  It still takes him awhile, but it comes out.

  • My baby has the same problem.  She is on 1/2 formula and 1/2 pumped breast milk.

The nurse said to soak her bum in warm water (90-100F, normal bath temp) for 5 mins and it worked last nite!

Her last BM was Saturday nite and then last nite after the bum soaking.  Hugh amount of poop.

She seems to be making the grunting noise and red face again today... hope not...  no BM since last nite yet...

  • When DD is constipated I give her a bottle of ready to feed formula. Within an hour she is usually able to have a BM. My guess is that ready to feed formula must be richer than the powder formula?
  • glycerin suppositories...they work every time

Did you use baby prune juice or regular prune juice? I'm having this problem too.

  • With my baby we put vaseline on a q -tip and inserted it in his bum about half an inch or so.  It worked really well and he had two bm's within the hour.  Good luck!

I used Sunsweet 100% Prune Juice.  It is all natural with no additives.  The Pedi told me the baby prune juice wouldn't be as effective.
