45 days was a bit excessive but he still deserved to be punished. What if the knife - and yes, from what I've seen it was a knife - was taken from him and used to harm another child? What then?
I don't give a damn if he is sweet and cute and wears a shirt and tie to school or not. He broke the rules and needs to learn that there are consequences to doing so. Not Mommy called the news and now everything is okay.
He broke the rules by bringing something cool to show his friends. So, take the tool away for the day (and give it to the parent when they pick him up). Maybe, MAYBE, send him home early that day. But 45 days suspension? Or even 3 days? Absurd. He doesn't understand the problem, and shouldn't at that age. The goal is to keep kids safe. So remove the "weapon" and get on with your life.

He was still suspended, but it was for 5 days I think.
