feeding one baby and the other one crying to be fed

What do you do?  Right now our twins are on the same feeding schedule.  Pretty much eat every 4 hours and if one is still sleeping when the other is done we wake them up to feed.  Works well.  A lot of the times they are clockwork and both ready to feed at the same time.  My husband will be going back to work in a few weeks and the trials we've done by ourselves when both are up and ready to be fed haven't gone good.  I know a baby can't self soothe right now so it breaks my heart not to hold the other one when I'm feeding one.  How do you handle this?

  • Feed them at the same time, each laying on their boppy newborn lounger with me sitting between them.

I do this, or sit them both in their car seats and stand in front of them.

  • I sit on the couch or floor, with the kids in their boppies on either side of me. At night I prop them up on a king sized pillow. Try different positions and see what will work for you, I took the suggestions I got and did trial and error.

  • Mine eat at the same time propped in boppies.  The only time them I have to hear one cry and can't really help them is during burp time.  Eventually, I want to feed them while they're in their bouncy chairs, but I still feel like they're not up enough in them.

Try some different things and you'll find something that works for you.  The only thing I suggest doing (which I'm still working on) is finding a way to support your back!   I think I'm going to have to rearrange our living room a little bit so I can sit against the couch.

  • i feed them at the same time all the time.  I lay one in a boppy next to me, and one in the crook of my leg (bent up on the couch)- so they are sort of next to each other (one a little more in front)... it's easy to hold the bottles this way... I just get them both to eat enough before I have to burp them, so they aren't screaming hungry when waiting for the bottle while the other burps.... though, now I can feed the whole bottle before burping- but that is a new thing for us... and i LOVE it ;)

  • We really tried to feed both at the same time, just because both got too upset if one woke while the other was eating. I did what many MoMs do--sit in between the babies, each in a Boppy. When they got a little bigger, we used bouncy seats instead. Definitely keep trying to see if you can get the tandem feeding to work; it REALLY makes things easier in the long run, even if it's a little rough at first. (Mine also took forever to drink their bottles the first few months--40 to 60 minutes, for a bottle!!--so feeding them separately just was not an option!)

  • I want to feed them at the same time but my daughter is so fragile and needs sidelining positioning because of her feeding (she has reflux).  She needs more individualized feeding for now.
  • I definitely understand your problem with not being able to tandem feed. My twins both had reflux and would not tolerate feeding at the same time. Be patient. It will happen eventually. I feed one in a boppy beside me, and one in my lap. It took three months until they could handle it tho. Before that, I would feed them one half a bottle, then feed the other, until they each had a full bottle. It is also better for the reflux to eat slower. Good luck to you!
  • Propping in Boppies was not comfortable for me and didn't give enough of an incline for Audrey and her reflux.

I had better luck placing them each in a bouncy seat, one on each side of me.  I just put my back against the couch and sat on the floor between them.  This was a lot easier on my back, and much better for Audrey's reflux issues.
