My school is experiencing a small outbreak of chicken pox. The school
nurse came by personally to tell me I was banned from the clinic today
(not that I go in there much anyway). I've had chicken pox before so
I'm not too worried about it, but I did google it to see what could
happen to a fetus--nasty bad stuff if a mama catches it very early in a
pregnancy! All kinds of birth defects. If a newborn catches it, very
bad stuff also. Seems everyone is so worried about h1n1 that we forget
about the more common, seemingly "harmless" diseases--can't live life
in a bubble, though...
Re: Something new to worry about besides h1n1
Even if you had chicken pox it is possible that you didn't have a strong enough case of it to build up an immunity. I got it twice, once when I was 6 and again at 13. It is much worse if you get it when you are an adult.
I don't wanna freak you out, but just don't get too close to anyone and practice good handwashing!
My OB told me that whooping cough has made a significant comeback in our area... she knows of two babies who died from it.
Vaccinations are developed for a reason.
To ease your mind, can you call your OB? I know mine ran bloodwork at my first appt to look for sufficient immunity to these things (like chicken pox and rubella), since immunity can wane over time.
Maybe they ran the tests on you, too, and can reassure you that staying away from the nurses station is more than enough to be safe
