Ovulation test kits - waste of money or worth it?

Out of curiosity, I wanted to see what you ladies thought about the ovulation test kits.  Waste or worth the money?  I hadn't planned to use the insanely high dollar ones I've seen, but thought since we were going to start trying again that I'd test them out.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

  • I tried a few different brands before I pg and the only ones I liked were the Clearblue easy ones with the smiley face. The others were way to hard for me to figure out if it was positive or not.

  • I thought that they were worth it.  I bought the cheap target OPK tests and used those until I thought that I had a positive and then confirmed with the digitals.  That way I could make a pack of digitals works for a few months.  It was much cheaper that way.  After a couple of months you will know when to start to use the tests and you can use far less of them.

Lots of people have success with the cheapy tests at saveontests.com and early-pregnancy-tests.com.  Those were hard for me to read, but many people love them.

  • I'm a bit of a lurker, but wanted to throw in my two cents.  I used ovulation test strips (I think they were $10 or so for a package of strips that lasts a month).  I used them to successfully get pregnant twice, which was quite a feat with PCOS and a very weird ovulation schedule.  They were awesome and cheap!  I only really tested when I thought I could be ovulating, so a pack lasted me several months.  Good luck!

  • I used them in conjunction with taking my temperature, to make sure they both confirmed the same ovulation day....they worked well!  I think I only used the smiley ones one month, the ones with the lines worked just fine and I liked that I could see when ovulation was imminent with those - the smiley ones are just you are or you aren't.

  • I used the CBE 30 day kit for one month (I had very irregular cycles and had no clue when I was ovulating - the 5 or 7 days weren't going to help me) and got pregnant the first month.  For me, it was worth the money!
  • I use the Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor--it is really easy to use and I got a brand new one on ebay for not too much $$.  It worked for me and I got pregnant the first time I tried.  I lost the baby though, so we are trying again and I think it is still adjusting to my body being a little whacked out b/c it gave me high fertility this month and we tried, but no luck.  I plan to keep using it though--good luck!

  • Worth it!

It's hard to know when you ovulate, Unti I used the Clearblue easy ones with the smiley face I thought i ovulated a few days before I actually did.

  • I had a terrible time figuring out opk tests. The cbefm worked for me the first month. I also bought mine off eBay for cheap.

  • Worth it! RE wants me using Clear Blue Easy digital during our IUI cycle.  They are the easiest to use.
  • Thanks ladies, I really appreciate the feedback and buying something tonight!
  • Worth it takes all the guesss work out.  CBE was the brand my doc recomended and he said it made a huge difference.  the CBEFM is nice also.
  • I think they are worth it.  I had two m/c before I had my last baby and my body was way our of wack.  I usually O on day 12 and if I had not used the CBE test I would have missed my opportunity.  I didn't even start using them till after my usual time to O.  I know my body pretty well from trying NOT to get pg that I could tell I didn't ovulate so I bought the box and wham I got pg that month with a successful pg.  Good luck!  I think it is a great way to learn how your body works.
