Support belt/ Rib Pain?

I have had quite a bit of rib pain lately. I thought it was my ribs spreading but my doc thought it was actually the weight of my belly pulling the ligaments/tendons attached to my ribs. She suggested a support belt. They seem like they'd be incredibly uncomfortable, likely to roll, and altogether pointless.

Does anyone have one that they could share an opinion on? Any other cures for rib pain?

Re: Support belt/ Rib Pain?

  • I bought the cheapest one they had at BRU ($18), and it helps with my low back/hip/butt pain (sacroiliac joint pain). However, I'd recommend getting a more expensive one. The one I got is so narrow (like an ace bandage) that it cuts into my skin (not really CUTS, I mean more like it DIGS into my skin) and it makes me batty. My coworker told me that she had a more expensive one when she was pregnant and it wasn't uncomfortable for her at all.

  • I have rib pain, too.  I hadn't heard of anyone else having this, so I'm glad to know there are two of us.  Mine's only on my right side, which seems weird.

I have a support belt and tried wearing it one day, but the velcro on it irritated my skin.  I should probably give it another try with a Bella Band or something under the support belt to protect my skin from the velcro.

That's genius! I am going to try that. I'm so glad you said that!

  • Ugh. I have such a hard time spending money of stuff like that since I don't know if it will help or not... those suckers are $30.00 and up for the more expenssive ones.
  • i bought one from motherhood ($18)and although i think it makes my back feel better, i feel like my belly is being restricted too much like i cant breath easily...
  • I have been having terrible rib pain. I think it was initially caused by a cough and has just gotten worse. At the MW's recommendation, I bought a maternity support belt but used it around my ribs. I didn't really find that it helped but I am in serious pain here -- it hurts to take a deep breath, laugh, cough, sneeze, roll over in bed, etc. I would suggest wrapping yourself with an ace bandage first. If that seems to help, then maybe invest in a good belt. I think mine is a nice one but I don't think anything is going to help my pain other than getting rid of this nagging cough, rest and delivering this baby!
