When is popcorn ok?

Re: When is popcorn ok?

  • yes calips. thats exactly what scientific studies are saying - at 4 years and 1 day, all children can eat popcorn. //wtf

Living in fear of every "could have" and restricting everything based on this is much less intelligent.

and that could be the most idiotic thing i have read in a long time. no one is restricting everything. cutting up grapes and saying no to popcorn is not living in fear.  its understanding that even though your 2 year old is obviously a competent eater, that those foods are misleading and easily inhaled. i just gave the facts - just like other posters did. :)

  • Ok.. I'm officially on the bad mom list! And not even realized it! My son has had most of this stuff by the time he was two! But I guess my whole theory on it.. is that you don't have to forbid any sort of food.. as long as you use common sense about it. Yes there are some things you wait on .. because little ones don't have the sense..

    • Hot dogs  (loves them, but i used common sense and i still cut them in half.. when he was really little. I'd cut them up even smaller)
    • Nuts and seeds (he has had sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds)
    • Chunks of meat or cheese (again. LOVES meat and cheese.. but I make sure to cut it up small enough.. and I don't let him run off eating. He sits at the table and I make sure he isn't stuffing his face)
    • Whole grapes (loves them. but they are cut in half)
    • Hard, gooey, or sticky candy (when he was little little.. no candies.. he wasn't a fan of candy much)
    • Popcorn (he's had this since he was like 9 months old - that little.. we would break off tiny pieces of the puffy part and give it to him one at a time. just like those little puffy stars for toddlers. then it moved up to one piece at a time. they to a few pieces in a bowl.. now I will give him a bowl of his own.. but again. I don't let him run off with it. he sits with us and i make sure he's eating them one at a time. )
    • Chunks of peanut butter (ds loves PB&J sandwiches)
    • Raw vegetables (my sons favorite! raw green peppers, raw carrots, raw potatoes... again. just make sure they are cut up small enough and make sure they aren't stuffing their faces)
    • Fruit chunks, such as apple chunks (same as with veggies)
    • Chewing gum (probably not till he was like 2 or 3.. i dont' remember.. but again. it was a tiny small piece that didn't matter if he swallowed it.

I guess I'm just one of those believers that I feel that if you just use common sense and actually watch and know how your kid eats they can eat pretty much anything.. Obviously there are some exceptions to that just by using the common sense rule. Call me a bad mom. But my son is 4 and he's never had a problem with choking. No i don't go giving him whole grapes.. or whole hot dogs.. or something that he obviously will choke on.. but I know some kids that choke easy.. or want to always stuff their mouth full of food. And yea.. that is going to be a greater choking hazard. I guess I'm just a country girl that was brought up this way and I never had a problem. You just have to use common sense and cut things up .. and give it to them in portions and watch them.. so they can't choke. Even adults can choke on their food. its always going to be a hazard.. their entire life. I just taught him how to eat right and be careful.. and he doesn't have any issues.

  • Jess...according to Punk I am on the "bad mommy" list too!  OK so off that list DS has had:

hot dogs...just like you would eat them on the bun with ketchup, not cut up.

nuts and seed...almonds, cashews, peanuts, hazelnuts...He loves them all

chunks of meat or cheese...how small do you cut their food??  My goodness DS and DD were eating cheese slices this weekend.

Whole grapes....just had some after lunch.  Big green ones too!

Hard, gooey, or sticky candy....he loves lollipops.  Gets one every time he gets a haircut.  He had a lemonhead for the first time this weekend.  Oh and DD also likes lollipops

Popcorn....they also have this at the barber shop and he gets a bag after each haircut

Chunks of peanut butter....he eats PB&J sandwiches every day.  No crust cut in half

Raw vegetables....any time he puts the dog in the crate he gives one carrot to the dog and one for himself

Fruit chunks.....am I still supposed to give him purees??  Come on now!

Chewing gum...this is the only thing he has not had
