drop side versus non drop side crib?

I'm reading a lot of people tend to sway towards non-drop side cribs.  Any reason why (other than the moving parts issue?)
After 2 years of IF, and moving forward with adoption we were thrilled to discover we were pregnant with no intervention in 2009. Miss Molly joined our family in February 2010 and we could not be more in love with our little angel. Lilypie Second Birthday tickers blog www.grumpysnickles.com

Re: drop side versus non drop side crib?

  • The non-drop side cribs are more solid.  Drop side are becoming less and less safe and are being recalled left and right.

  • It's mostly the safety issues.  Plus, dropsides tend to be noisy and/or rattle the crib when you drop the side, which wakes up the baby -- thus defeating the purpose of having a dropside.

  • I wanted a convertible crib, so no drop sides were needed.

  • We have a dropside that is what I wanted It helps a lot when the baby is little so your not cranking your back so much getting it in and out.  JMO

  • We've had 2 dropside cribs and both were recalled.  Also if you're short like me (5'2) then a stationary crib is usually a better option.  The dropsides that we've looked at have seemed flimsy, but that may have been because they're store models.  Plus they tend to make a lot of noise when you are trying to raise or lower the side and therefore wake up baby.
  • The drop side cribs have been a safety issue.  You are seeing more and more recalls from these drop side cribs compared to the non-drop side cribs.  As for the non-drop side cribs, usually a convertible crib.  It allows you to have your baby grow with the crib.  Instead of having to go get a new bed each time they grow out of the last one.
