Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Nutramigen/Alimentum

I am so frustrated with the run-around I feel like we keep getting with our Pedi. My DD has been a really fussy baby since she was 2 weeks old. She has mainly had issues with excessive spitting up. We have tried similac advance, similac sensative, good start, and enfamil gentlease formulas with no success. I am now using similac sensative RS (for excessive spit ups) and she is still spitting up huge amounts 5-10 times after each bottle. Shes in a low percentile for weight (3%) but the pedi isnt concerned. We have tried zantac with no success. I am just worried about my baby and wondering if anyone here has their babies on nutramigen or alimentum. Did it help with excessive spitting up? I dont want to put DD through yet again another formula change, but it was what my pedi suggested after calling him today.

Sorry so long, thanks in advance!

Re: Nutramigen/Alimentum

  • Your daughter is beautiful :)

DS has been fussy as well, we tried zantac with no success. We were finally sent to a GI specialist who put him on Prevacid. He never had issues with spitting up excessively and he's bf. If the prevacid didn't help enough with the main issues our next step was the nutramigen. Our pedi said if we went that route to be aware he might not take it at first because it has a very different taste and it would take days for him to get used to it. Maybe you can ask to be referred to a specialist and try that first before switching? GL, I know it's frustrating!!

eta: with main issues being very fussy, when he did spit up it was acidic smelling, chewing on tongue, gagging, etc..

  • we ahve been using alimentum RTF w/ rice cereal mixed in since DD was 3 months per our pedi. it was worked wonders (since meds and other formulas wouldn't work). it was a life saver for me. and the RTF made DD spit up less than the powdered form.

  • First of all, she is just beautiful.  Secondly, I need that bow for Aven.  Third, my twins were on Nutramigen for spitting up/reflux until they were 10 months old.  It is expensive and smells gross, and cut their spitting up by only like 30%.  It was, however, worth it!  Cutting the spitting was helpful, even if it was just a little bit.  It is pricey, though, and I used to buy it on ebay.  It was my newly stay at home mommy hobby-trolling ebay for the lease expensive can of nutramigen.  I typically got it for 15-17 a can that way.  Good luck!!
  • My DS has been a big spitter since he started getting more than 2oz at a feeding.  My pedi put him on the Alimentum and it actually made his spitting way worse.  It would come out his nose, repeatedly, after every feeding.  It got so bad one night that he was choking on his vomit, in his sleep.  The next morning, I switched to Similac Sensitive RS and never looked back.

Have you asked your pedi about putting cereal in the bottle to help keep it down?

  • We have been on 6 different formulas! We did use the nutramigen for a short period of time with no help and then the GI specialist switched her to alimentum. It has worked wonders, she didn't spit up so much as projectile vomited after each feeding.  She now will occasionally spit up but no more vomiting.  She is also on prilosec and we thicken the formula with 1 tablespoon per 2 ounces of formula of oatmeal cereal.  Good luck with this, I know what you are going through!

This...although we didn't try meds...we did cereal first. I has been a life saver! We even weaned her from Alimentum to Similac Sensitive successfully - which has been great on the wallet!

  • Ok, I could go on for hours on this subject, but here's the shortened version.  My son was in and out of hospitals from 6 days old until he was 3 months old with much of the same issues.  He wasn't gaining weight, he spit up everything I fed him, he would cry in agony for 20+hrs.  The only time he was happy was 30 mins right before he would eat.  I originally nursed him, cut dairy from my diet (on the advice of ped), switched to formula, soy formula, sensitive formula, so on and so on.  We had every diagnosis from reflux, severe reflux, aspirating reflux, colic, you name it.  He had every test done to rule out gut twist, and numerous other things.  We finally saw a pediatric gastroenterologist and she diagnosed him with FPIES. (Food protein induced entercolitis syndrome).  It mimics a food allergy, but isn't an actual allergy.  Google it, see if the symptoms are similar to what you are going thru.  My son is on prevacid (to protect his esophagus during spitup days) and Alimentum as his sole source of nutrition.  He will start all organic brown rice cereal in a few weeks, but no soy or dairy products until he is 3 years of age.  My son still had reactions on Nutramigen, but I'm told Nutramigen still has trace amounts of dairy in it.  The Alimentum is just about the same, only has sucrose in it to help with the taste.  (my son wouldn't even eat the Nutramigen)  As previously posted, Ebay is a great place to look and we also order on Diapers.com with our coupons when it goes on sale and stock up.  Some insurances will cover the Alimentum if it's the only source of nutrition your child can get.  Good luck and I hope this helps you...feel free to email me with question.  jenniger811atattdotnet
