I'm talking for the baby. It took me close to 2 hours to get E to sleep today. We're just hanging around home today so I guess it's not that big of a deal. Would you have scrapped it? Or, is it nap at all costs in your house?

Re: How long do you try for a nap before you give up?
It depends on what we are doing that day. I usually give it 1-2 hours. I give it at least an hour and get dd up when she starts yelling "I'm awake!"
ETA: I didn't realize you were talking about your infant. In that case I would try and get her to nap at all costs to avoid a crabby baby.
With the baby I tend to scrap it faster than I do with my 3 1/2 yr old. With the older guy, he needs to stay in his room until I hear it get quiet for a period (at least an hour before I give up).
With the baby (who's 6.5 mo), I usually give it about 15-20 minutes of trying, then will get him up, make sure all of his needs are met (not hungry, clean diaper, etc.) then try again about an hour later. I also scrap it faster when DS is teething or not feeling well for some other reason. The hard part is when they start to get over-tired, and then yeah, I do tend to aim for nap at all costs.
So basically, I'm no help b/c I do both - lol.
Sorry naptime was so rough today
