Where would I start to find info on an old murder case?

My great-aunt was murdered in the early 40's. No one ever told my grandma much about it, as she was only 9 at the time. I'd like to know more--like I know the park where it happened. The park happens to be right across from the zoo, and I drive by it frequently, and find myself wishing I knew exactly where it happened. I have 2 newspaper articles about it, but they are very conflicting. Is it just impossible to find out more, as everyone that was around then is now gone? Or can I find police reports and stuff?

You should be able to pull police reports.  They don't normally get destroyed.  Also, death certificates, etc should be on file with the town hall where it happened.

Wow.  I have no idea.  Never thought of it.  I think if it were me, maybe my first thought would be to talk to my BIL & SIL who are cops to find out where to start investigating.

City hall records, police station, and maybe the newspapers that printed the articles should all have info.
