Ed?

So we really like the name Edmund, but strongly dislike Eddie.  Do you think it is possible to avoid having this child called Eddie?

Re: Ed?

  • I like Edmund, I don't mind Ned, dislike Ed/Eddie for NNs.

There comes a point when you just cannot control the NNs that people give your child, and I think that people will always try to shorten Edmund to Ed or Eddie. Unless you deliberately use Ned, I don't think you can avoid Ed/Eddie. If you strongly dislike them, I would suggest another name..

  • No, I think Ed and Eddie are unavoidable.

  • My husband played lacrosse in college with a guy named Edmund and I never heard him called anything but Edmund.  Definitely never Eddie... just maybe his last name bc they all called each other by last names a lot.
  • I think it's probably unavoidable.

  • I wondered this myself.  Edmund is on our list too.  We don't like Ed or Eddie either.  Just Edmund.  Interested to see others response.

  • I will never buy into that argument that a nickname is "unavoidable.'  Of course it is.   As a parent, you say, "No, we call him Edmund."   And you keep saying that until people get the point.   But keep in mind, when your child is old enough to make his own decisions, he may like the name Ed or Eddie.

My name is Suzanne.  It's not Sue.  It's not Susan.  It's Suzanne.  Those are completely different names in my book.  Hubby's cousin is Thomas.  No one calls him Tom.  Close friend is Patrick.  No one calls him Pat.

And FWIW, my father's middle name was Edwin... that's nice, too.

Talk to my MIL. Both her sons were called by obvious nn's for their first names and she hated it. She constantly corrected people and didn't work. If you don't like the nn, don't name them that name. It's simple enough IMO.
