Need help: Did anyone deal with hemorrhoids prior to delivery?

Did anyone have hemorrhoids before delivery that were bad, and if so, how did it impact your delivery? How was the recovery?

I got them about a month ago but they haven't hurt at all. Now suddenly, the past two days, my bum has been on FIRE. :(

Tucks pads, Prep H ... not helping. I iced last night and it helped, but I did it again today and it really did nothing to shrink them or make them feel better.

I called the doc and she said there's no magic bullet and that during delivery, many women do have them and they just try to make the woman as comfortable as possible.

I'm just really sad, as I want to look forward to birth, and now I have this extra painful side effect going on, one that may make the whole experience that much more painful. It's making me more fearful of giving birth, and I hate that. Plus I'm just miserable right now with the pain! Ugh.

Just looking for any experience anyone else may have had with them ....

  • I had hemmeroids when I was pregnant, but they weren't horrible.  Just itchy, and painful when I'd go to the bathroom.  What I did: every time I'd even just pee, I would use witch hazel pads (Tucks) and apply hemmeroid cream (I liked the hydrocortizone kind).  Also, when I would wipe that area, I'd use witch hazel pads, not toilet paper or even those cottonelle wet wipes.

I don't really know how having hemmeroids will affect your delivery, though.  They may get worse when you push, but I promise you won't notice any pain from them!  Especially if you have an epidural, you won't be feeling pain.  Really, even if you have a natural birth, any pain from them will be the last thing on your mind.  Don't dread labor because of them!!

  • I had hemorrhoids during pregnancy, what a pain.

During labour and delivery they really are not going to make a difference. It's afterwards, and even women who didn't have them during pregnancy are going to deal with them postpartum.   When you push, you do push down into your bottom and that can lead to or aggravate the hemorrhoids but you really wont be thinking of that while its happening.  There's so many other things going on :)

I would recommend taking good care of them now but to expect to be taking care of them in the weeks following delivery.  Additionally, salt baths seem to help.

EDIT: I had a natural home birth with an OP baby.  The piles were the last thing on my mind during delivery. They would not have been a factor in deciding if I needed help handling the pain. Although one of my midwives laughed a little when she saw them afterwards while recommending the tucks, prep H, salt baths :)

  • I had them and they were awful prior to delivery.  During...not so bad (had the epi) ...after, ABSOLUTELY painful.  I am STILL dealing with internal ones and had three external ones for about three weeks.  I am sorry but if you have them, it will be worse than tearing or a cut (I had a cut)...much worse. :( They make pooing horribly painful and generally suck.  I sat on my boppy for a coupel fo weeks and used lots of dermoplast, tucks pads and took LOTS of stool softener. I hope you don't have to deal with that.  It was the worst part of my recovery.
  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate it.

And wow what cute babies in this thread!! I can't wait to meet mine!! :)

  • Mine were really sore and huge a few weeks before I was due, and I was absolutely petrified about what was going to happen to them while I was pushing.  Thankfully through a lot of sitz baths, witch hazel, ice, and prep H they did go back down before I had the baby.  Surprisingly despite a couple hours of pushing (that ended in a c-section) they were fine afterward.  They're still there but not sore or swollen.

  • I had them prior to delivery with DS...Try putting some tucks pads in the fridge and then stickin' them in your crack (sorry to be blunt lol).  It helps a lot!  I didn't have any trouble pushing during delivery, but I definitely had some angry roids afterward.  I continued to use my peri-bottle after a BM, took a stool softener twice daily, and used my cool tucks...they're gone now and I haven't had any more issues.  Good luck!!

  • I had them during pregnancy. They were on and off the entire pregnancy. They were pretty bad at times. I tried many different things to sooth. Try alternating hot and cold. I would sit in the tub and then try ice. Tucks and Prep H did nothing for me. I actually just used vaseline. I would use the flushable wipes when I went to the bathroom and then I would glob on vaseline after each bathroom. The vaseline lubricated and helped sooth them some. **TMI** Also when they started to shrink the would either pop back in with the lubrication of the vaseline or I was able to push them back in. I used disposable glloves.

I actually had a flare up a week before I delivered. The night before it was bad - I laid on my side the entire night.

I didn't feel them during the delivery at all. No effect. I had an epi - not sure if that makes a difference.

The problem I had was after delivery. I had a tear and laceration and the roids were worse. It was very painful. I used the icepack pads they had and they gave me stool softeners. My first bowel movement was the next night after the delivery. It was VERY painful. I was crying. I know you don't want to hear this - but I wish I had known more about it.

I was in pain for the first week to week and a half. My bowel movements were VERY painful and I just about cried after each one for the first week. I continued the stool softeners... and am still taking them. They are MUCH better now - but still bother me when I have to go to the bathroom.

If you have any other questions.. feel free to PM me. Even if its after birth. I know I looked for advice and encouragement on the boards after b/c I was in so much pain.?
