Nurseries and Baby Gear

To carpet, or not to carpet?

We have hardwood floors throughout the house - area rugs only.

I'm considering wall to wall in the nursery.  I know there's the whole dust/allergens things, but I vaccuum like a lunatic - total clean freak.  So I'm not sure how much of a problem that would really be.  We don't really have allergies in our families, on a side note.

My reasoning for considering it is that it seems warmer, and as the babies grow they could sit/crawl/play on the floor and it'd be soft/comfortable.

Thoughts?

Re: To carpet, or not to carpet?

  • I REALLY wanted hardwoods in our nursery, but we had carpet and didn't want to deal with it since we moved into the house the day before I was due!  Anyway, now that I have her, I am glad we have carpet. I still don't put her down directly on the carpet (she has a washable rug that we play on) but it's nice to have the play rug on a softer surface.

We have hardwoods throughout the rest of our house and I find that I always take her upstairs to her room to "play" because even with a rug, the hardwood surface seems so... hard.

  • When I think of carpet I think 'dirty'.  But I understand the softness thing, and I certainly loved my wall to wall carpet as a kid.

If you do it, go with wool instead of a synthetic for respiratory concerns.

  • we have wall to wall in the nursery but I think if you have hardwoods in the rest of the house it would look odd to put carpet in just one room. I'd probably buy a big fluffy area rug to soften it up for the baby and leave it as is. Also for resale purposes it'd be better to have hardwood I would think.
  • We have hardwoods throughout our house, but we have carpeted our whole upstairs which is where all the rooms are. ?It wasn't always that way, but the floors upstairs are so squeaky. ?Especially in the nursery, it drove me batty. ?Our house was built in 1920 so when I had someone over to look at fixing the squeaks, I was told my best bet was to just add carpet with a thick pad?underneath. ?That is what we did, it still squeaks, but not nearly as bad as the downstairs, and now after?pacing?back and forth with him for hours to get to sleep, a loud one doesn't wake him up as I walk out. ?I still use large area rugs too, I love the way they tie the decor together.

  • Our whole house is hardwood, and so is the nursery. I don't plan on carpeting because it would look weird having it in one room and I just don't like carpet. I will just buy an area rug for the nursery. I am not concerned and I think the baby will be fine.

  • We got an area rug for our hardwoods.  It looks really nice.  Once we put all the furniture in there, we didn't have much floor space that was showing, anyway, so a rug is sufficient.  I'm in love with our 1940s hardwoods, though, so I'm a bit partial.

  • Thanks for the input.  I should clarify, we have hardwood everywhere including the nursery - this would go over the floor in the nursery.  If we resold we'd just pull it up.  Anyway, I think I'm leaning that way...  Thanks everyone!
