After we were?discharged?from the NICU we were suppose to fortify our breastcmilk by putting a scoop of formula to a particular number of cc's of breastcmilk. I believe it was one tablespoon of the preemie formula to a 130cc of breast milk shake it up and then give it to them in a bottle.
?Did this make any sense? I'm guessing the doctors didn't give you a specific way to do it. Our doctors are the ones who told us to do the 130cc to 1 table spoon, to add a specific number of calories.
?eta: The other posts reminded me that it wasn't a scoop it was a tbl. spoon. I have a bad memory it hasn't even been that long.???

We were instructed to do one tsp. of formula to every 3 oz. of breastmilk. The NICU sent us home with Enfacare(?), so we have been using that ever since.
Thanks ladies... they told me to buy the fortifier which isn't sold here so my pedi said to use regular Enfacare to fortify but of course she forgot how

It depends. Andrew was on 24 cal when he was discharged because he was barely gaining weight, but prior to that he was on 22 cal. So you need to make sure to ask your doctor to make sure you're fortifying to the right calorie.
We're currently fortifying to 22 cal, so I have the instructions out on my kitchen counter. If you need them, I'll post as soon as I'm done pumping here.
I just checked our instruction sheet (still stuck to our fridge). It's 1/2 teaspoon 22 calorie formula to 100 mL of breast milk or 1/2 teaspoon of 20 calorie formula to 3 oz of breast milk, to make 22 cal/oz.
You should really call your doctor again because you need to fortify it to a specific calorie content. I would hate to give your LO a really big upset stomach if it was mixed improperly. If your doctor doesn't know then tell him to find out. You could also try calling the NICU you were in to see if they could help you out.
Geez, after reading the PPs responses, I wonder if our NICU gave us the right instructions (which I just pulled from our fridge)...
"To fortify to 22 calories per ounce, mix 1 teaspoon Neosure per every 5oz (150ml) breastmilk - or 1/2 teaspoon per 2.5oz (75ml). Refrigerate immediately after mixing and use fortified milk within 24 hours of mixing."
You might want to confirm the instructions with your pedi, since it kinda seems to differ?

We need to fortify to 22. Gee this is when I wish I didn't live in a small no where city with doctors who have NO CLUE how to do things
We were told exactly this, except using Similac NeoSure.
ditto this.
