Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Partial Mole Pregnancy

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this?

I went yesturday for a ultrasound because my AFP at 16 weeks came back high and they wanted to make sure there was no NTD. I thought this was going to be a great day because we could find out the sex and I believed the baby was going to be great, I should have been 19 weeks. Well we found out the baby had no heart beat and they said it was a partial mole pregnancy. The baby looked beautiful to me. I am in so much emotional pain right now especially since they can not do the D&C until Tuesday and everytime I look at my stomach I want it back so bad.

I do not understand and I have googled so much, but no one seems to have the same experience. I have had 4 ultrasounds before this and everything was fine. I did the NT scan and blood work came back fine. At 16 weeks there was a heart beat. I am in a loss for words and thought you ladies may be able to help me.

Thank you.

Baby boy, you are forever loved and missed. 19 weeks 2 days 10/14/09 Partial Molar Pregnancy Lucas Glenn 12/18/10

I'm sorry I don't know anything about a partial mole pregnancy, but I hope you can find some answers.

  • I have not experienced a partial molar pregnancy, but I wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss.  ((HUGS))  You are in my thoughts and prayers.
  • I'm so sorry.  There's nothing anyone can say or do that will make this better, but hopefully, time will.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. My last pregnancy was a parital molar. It was discovered at 7 weeks after one small spot of blood on tp. It is rare for it to be discovered after 12 weeks. Usually spotting and loss occurs before 12 weeks. If you have any questions or just want to talk feel free to message me. (sorry that i couldnt put a warning up for having a ticker ladies :(   )
  • I am so sorry for your loss.  I had a pmp last year.  We found out at 12 weeks at our first u/s, so we never saw a HB.... I dont know if there ever was one.  I have done a lot of reading on the subject since then, and I have read of women with pmp's that got very far in their pregnancy only to be devistated.  If you have any questions for me about it let me know, or page me.  I have written about my experience in my blog if you are interested.  ((BIG HUGS))

  • I had a partial mole. I was not as far along as you but we did see a formed baby with a heartbeat at 7 weeks and by 8 weeks the baby was gone and my uterus was filled with these weird shaped masses. I had a D&C a couple days later. My doctor had no experience with molar pregnancy and didn't know what he was looking at on the ultrasound. Only after the pathology report came back did we know what had happened.

From what I understand, the abnormal cells are in the placenta and maybe it just took longer for them to cause problems for you. I'm so terribly sorry you are going through this. Especially being so far along.

You may have more luck searching "gestational trophoblastic disease".  When I was searching I found this doctor. He is a specialist in the field. I sent him information about my case through e-mail and he gave me alot of helpful information.

  • I would recommend having chromosomal testing with your D & E or C if that is what you are having. I did and it showed triploidy. Partial or full moles are very common with triploidy (your egg was fertilized by 2 sperm and caused it). It doesn't mean you def had triploidy but there is a good chance since it is common with it. I made it to 12.2 weeks and then had surgery due to loss of heartrate which we saw on 5 other US's. I didn't have a partial or full mole but they did look for it. GL
  • My OB said that what they do with partial or full moles is watch your hcg's down to 0 and watch them for at least 6 months and then if it doesn't go back up after 6 months you would be cleared to ttc again. ((((HUGS))))
  • I also have experienced a partial molar pregnancy.  I only made it almost 11 weeks.  I can not imagine the pain you must be feeling.  I also had to wait several days for the d&c and it was awful.  We had our u/s on Friday, could not have d&c until Tuesday.  So hard not to think about.

It's such a scary and sad time.  I am so so sorry for your loss.  If you have any questions,  please let me know.  Big hugs.

  • I am very sorry for your news. I cannot imagine.....

I only have this to offer: I was also told I had to wait many days for my D&C.

I went, literally, apechit on the phone, and got in the next morning. It's amazing what a mother in a bad place can get done.

  • I am so, so sorry for your loss. I know all too well what it's like to get bad news at your gender ultrasound. That is absolutely heartbreaking.

FYI, we have a late loss group that checks in on Wednesdays to see how everyone is doing if you'd like to join us.

  • I am so, so, so sorry for your loss.

I had a partial molar pregnancy, too.  I had two healthy ultrasounds and found out at 14 weeks that the baby had no heartbeat.  It was devastating, but I can't imagine how much harder it would be with even more healthy ultrasounds, that much more hope, and such loss.

Feel free to PM with any questions.  I rarely check this board any more.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss and that it's so late and a pmp.  My thoughts are with you and your DH...
  • I am so sorry for your loss. I had a complete molar pregnancy at 7 weeks, so we never saw a heartbeat. The ladies who have replied are wonderful, and helped me so much via lurking whether they knew it or not.
  • I am new to boards and was checking out to see if anyone was blogging about PMP myself.  I just experienced a full molar pregnancy back in late May.  I got married in April (conceived the night before... I know it) and found out I was pregnant on Mothers day... awesome right.  Well I had some bad spotting end of May and went to the ER and had all the tests run and they said I had a MC.  Called my OB and I went in for a DNC that week.  He informed me that I may have had a MP and that if that were the case, I would have to wait a year to conceive.  I was giving blood every 2 weeks and in mid July my levels were at 241 (the lowest) and 2 weeks later were at 3,666.  I went back into the OB and because I was not pregnant he referred me to a specialist who ended up being a gynecologic oncologist.  My situation turned into cancer.  I have gestational troboplastic disease, which is a rare form of cancer and can be contained in the uterus.  And it is extremely curable.  I started taking shots of chemo every other day for four days starting in July and my count is -2 and my oncologist tells me I just have to wait 6 months (being at zero or better) to conceive.  Just ask questions and do a bunch of research online.  www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancycomplications/molarpregnancy.html got me started on my research.  My heart goes out to all the woman who have experienced what I have experienced.

Not sure if you'll check back but I also moved onto gestational trophoblastic disease, I did four rounds of chemo (act-d) in March and April of this year.  My oncologist is making me wait a year post my last treatment before we can ttc again.  I'm sorry you had to go the chemo route also.

  • yeah, chemo blows... but there wasn't anything I could do about it.  So, I just did what I could.  I am getting my blood tested every other week to make sure that I am at zero and right now I am at -2 so that is good.  I am just very concerned for my next pregnancy that it will occur again.  I am 38 and want to have children with my husband and I am very concerned about this...
